Hey, it turns out I agree with the taliban:

"We have seen no change in his strategy for peace. He has done nothing for peace in Afghanistan. We condemn the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for Obama.

"When Obama was elected president, we were hopeful he would keep his promise to bring change. But he brought no change, he has continued the same old strategy as Bush.

"He reinforces the war in Afghanistan, he sent more troops to Afghanistan and is considering sending yet more. He has shed Afghan blood and he continues to bleed Afghans and to boost the war here."

O M G, I feel the same way!

Glad I'm not the only one...

For what!?

More people have been killed in Barrack's first 9 months around the world by US Troops than the last 9 months of Bush's term, and there is no sign of a withdraw from any nation the US is currently involved in military action with. In fact, Obama is planning to send more troops overseas.

Obama's first act of international affairs was to have a boat load of African pirates shot in the head.

It is clear that the Nobel panel is no longer noble.

The man is still in the first year of his presidency. Granted, he's putting a lot of focus on diplomacy, but there has not been enough time yet to see the long term results of his work. This Peace Prize has an uncomfortably good chance of turning into a joke with what he does in the next three to seven years.

Well, we can't really blame him or call him a warmonger for that. They were holding a hostage at gunpoint, the SEALS had clear shots, and something had to be done.

When I heard it I swore it had to be an Onion article. Nominations for the prize ended February 1st. He was literally president for 12 days when he got nominated.

Okay, that just really, really ticked me off. I like Obama. Thus far, he seems like he's a stand-up kind of guy. But all this hero-worship that's going on around him is making me extremely nervous. It kind of reminds me of other leaders that the world has sworn in as "good", "noble," and "messengers of change"... and then pulled the wool over our eyes.

Exactly.

I don't even understand how he could be a candidate.

Oh I can understand why he would be a canidate, or even picked.

Whether or not I agree with it, or if it was a valid decision on the panel's part though is a different story intirely.

Giving a Nobel Peace Prize to a man who leads a country involved in wars in Iraq AND Afghanistan is like giving Kate McCann the 'Mother of the Year' award.

What exactly is he supposed to do about that? It would not be very conducive to peace if he pulled all troops out of the countries and let the still-shaky governments collapse. Once your country has destroyed the previous government, you have some responsibility to the citizens to help get the next stable one on its feet.

Yeah... But that's not what he's doing.

It's like you're intimating that what he's doing is actually helping those nations.

I'm ashamed to be a Norwegian right now.

This is almost as bad as when Al Gore won it. The nobel peace prize has turned into nothing more than a political farse

Yeah, because staying there has shown to cause great stability.

They are not there to make peace, war is business and business is good

I'm not sure what proportion of people here are American and what proportion are European but the "prize for not being George Bush" line is what the English news ran with today (both television and press).

This is pretty much the way it's seen and I think rightly so. It seems like they're just giving gold stars out to America now, like you would a child, to encourage it into more good behaviour! (I wonder what we'll use as a "naughty step" if they start another war...) My first thought when I heard this was that it might be a political move aimed at Americans themselves. To show European support for Obama and give him a prize that says "good man" on it in an attempt to shut the Republicans up. I'm sure you're all aware that Europe desperately needs US support at the moment if any progress is to be made on climate change proposals and, although the US are still not playing ball, Obama is preferable to Bush.

The absolutely astounding backlash against a national healthcare programme in the US has probably scared Europe a little as it looks like public opinion is shaky. (By the way, are words like Socialism and Liberal REALLY seen as derogative in America? That's absolutely unbelievable!)

All in all, the prize is laughable, Obama hasn't followed through yet, but I think its really aimed at Americans to try and encourage them to continue down the path they've chosen to follow by voting for Obama.

Anybody got any Fox News footage on this by the way? Would LOVE to see that! I've seen clips on British TV and it's hilarious.

ALSO - what poetry that Obama should receive this on the day America bombed the moon! :-D

And I completely agreed with the decision. However, these aren't the kinds of decisions that earn someone a Nobel Peace Prize. That's all I'm saying.
