Talking on the Phone

Texting is terrible when you're trying to sort out the details of your friend giving his father's credit card number to someone on Craig's list to confirm that he's eighteen and in return being signed up for a dozen different porn sites and essence, freaking out. That's when I like people to call me- during their nervous breakdowns, so I can coo to them about how it could be a credit card theft and the person is going to buy all sorts of sports cars, million dollar homes, and time shares with it.

Texting has it's place, but when I see someone text back and forth with a friend for 10 minutes when a 90 second phone call would have conveyed the same information more efficiently, I question the logic.

i don't mind talking on the phone (i actually enjoy it) when others call me

it's initiating calls that i dislike or forget to do

I'll talk on the phone if I have to. Other than that, I try to avoid it.

I should make point that you're talking to someone that texts long huge paragraphs of information, making sure that no word is spelled in txt talk, and if I misspell a word I go back and send 'Example*'

I know it's my age bias showing, but I hate. Hate. HAAAAAATE texting. I can't help but think that it's rude, somehow. I can't stand it when people text me, and I hate it when I see people texting when I'm right in front of them. Texting just makes me think of high schoolers and accidents (many recent major accidents were because people were texting and not paying attention).

The only thing worse, IMO, is hearing people talk on their cellphone while I'm in a public restroom. Hey, feel free to text then - I'd appreciate it. Because honestly? I do not want you giggling about your sex life while I'm taking a tinkle.

I'm with you on this one, but for a very different reason. I will allow Grammar Cat to illustrate:

I completely agree with the ladies comments. Texting should be banned. And violators should be executed.

Phone calls should be short and informative. If I want to philosophize, I prefer doing it face to face. My phonecalls rarely last more than 5 minutes. There are exceptions, but they are few and they usually have to do with extremely bad news being delivered in equally bad ways.

I love texting, and I think it is a very good thing. The problem is people don't have a sense of ettique with it. Texting does not involve talking outloud so people do not see it as the same thing as talking on the telephone, when in reality, the two are very similar to each other. I am mindful of texts and what not when people are around.

YES! If someone calls me, then fine. I still don't like talking on the phone (I am very awkward, speaking in broken sentences or I'm exceedingly giggly), but I certainly enjoy it more when someone else initiates.

If I have to make a phone call, I'll put it off...and put it off...aaaand put it off. I'll never forget that I have to make a call, but it will haunt me.

I guess I dislike it so much because I don't want to make the other person feel uncomfortable, which usually happens when I'm all awkward and silly on the other end.

So I avoid it. :p

Talking to people I know on the phone: hate it and am not very good at.
Talking to strangers and making a good impression on the phone: am good at it and enjoy the satisfaction it gives me.

This applies to real life too really:D

Also I hate it if the phone or door bell rings, I will attempt to ignore both unless the ringing becomes inscessant or I am axpecting something important or I am drunk.

My record for a phone call is 6 hours. Has anyone topped that?

I've thought about staying on the phone for a full 24 hours, but showering and other things complicated it.

Wow, same here! I SHARE 400 minutes with my father. I never pick up, even for friends unless they really need me. I don't know why, but the talking on the phone scares me! :m196:

I always have to run through what I'm going to say in my head first, and I never, EVER leave messages. I HATE leaving messages.

I am the exact same way. I detest leaving voice mail. I only do unless I know the person very well, or if I need something from them pretty badly.

I can't really explain it, but I just find it embaressing to do, as irrational as it is.

I hate talking on the phone, to me it's kind of awkward, plus I worry more talking on the phone with someone then in person. I'd rather text them.

I HATE talking on the phone with people I don't know. With friends, its fine. I don't even like calling businesses or whatever to make appointments or anything.

And I used to be a receptionist. Heh. :p

Aren't we a funny, funny bunch?

Talking on the phone is awkward, difficult...for one, I can never pay attention, for two, I never know what to say, and for three, I talk to fast and I get giddy and my voice is distorted (people sitting next to me tell me my voice changes on the phone, and sometimes I sound fake).

With good friends, I can talk...sometimes. I still find it very difficult to pay attention to a disembodied voice.

I do like to text, and I'm kind of bad with it, I'll admit that. I always use proper grammar, though, because that's more or less a pet peeve...it is my preferred mode of long distance communication, though.

Who uses text speak anymore? It's way faster to spell words using the built-in dictionary.
