Health Care Reform Defeated

Does anyone know what will happen with the health care reform since the senator died?

The Democrats no longer have 60 active seats, but I'm afraid the health care reform is pretty much dead anyway. Figures: Obama pushes for some decent legislation that I actually like, and then it unravels over two weeks of rampant fear-mongering and crippling compromise. It looks to me like the bill is in tatters, and Obama is too hesitant to strong-arm his way through the process while he still can.

It is perfect timing to die. While the nation is mourning this guy who wished all his life to get the bill passed, Obama should strongarm it in as a memorial bill.

Yess I think so too!! but then why isnt he?

I think because it would be too tacky to do it this soon. And Americans are really touchy about it - the liberals would get behind it, but the conservatives would say he's doing it to get support for his health care bill, and nothing else.

Again, two different views in a divided country.

It's a pity how obscure the White House's YouTube channel is.

I'm concerned about the effects on insurance companies, though (more specifically, the rates they will have to charge). Rejecting people due to preexisting conditions might be unpleasant, but it's how they manage to make a profit. If they have to accept anyone and everyone, then the risks increase, and everyone has to pay more.

Yeah, I too dislike that part. See, if they were allowed to reject people, and there's a government option that doesn't... it means that the companies fail bigtime.

They'll haemorrhage customers to the public option.
They'll go broke.

But currently it looks like the government option isn't going to happen. Instead, we'll be required to have insurance, and we'll have to pay more, except for those of us who can get tax credits. There could be some ugly consequences of that.

Keep talking Mr. President! The more you do the less people love you! heh...

Gawd I hate Pelosi.

While I hope she is correct, I can't help but wonder where her optimism is coming from given the current state of affairs.
She is mentally insane, you didn't know? That's where...

I wouldn't say she is insane. She just has a "the ends justify the means" kind of mentality. I can't stand that from either side of the aisle. Of course, that is just my personal opinion.

Why are Americans so scared of health care reform? Speaking as a citizen of a country where everyone is born with insurance, where nobody goes bankrupt because they get sick, what the heck is so bad about it?

Can someone explain this to me without resorting to populist weasel words like "socialism" (as if that's a bad ideology) and "lefties"?

It's socialism! They are taking away our personal freedom by forcefully taxing us to pay for it!

Um...no.
