Assuming the solution was real, sure. I mean many of us do this anyway, don't we.....in a manner of speaking?

11) The ending of murder? Sometimes murder is necessary, like an assassination of a dictator. (One who treats his people bad.)
I'll go with yes though.

12) The ending of crime? Yep, although this would have a lot of consequences..

13) The ending of ignorant hatred? Hmm, if this was possible, sure, because it'd increase the overall happiness.

14) A solution to all of our environmental problems? Does this also include problems with energy sources? If so, yes.

I would give my life if it's the optimal solution for supporting the sustainable cycle of all life forms on Earth (including humans). For the time being, I still don't think it's the optimal solution. I also wouldn't even call it "giving" my life, because I don't see my life as "mine", or anybody's. It just is.

1) The cure for cancer?
2) The cure for migraines?
The best "cure" for both would be better conditions of living, which would prevent them, for the most part.

3) The ending of all wars forever?
4) An end to world hunger?

-- same as above --

9) To save 100 lives of random people throughout the world?
10) To save 10 lives of random people throughout the world?

Depends very much on the situation. I think it is better to live and try to help make the world such that people do not force each other to answer such questions. /i.e. psychopathy of the type of SAW is not needed at all, and its origin is the religious concept of divine justice, which follows naturally from the concept of human slavery/

11) The ending of murder?
12) The ending of crime?
13) The ending of ignorant hatred?

-- same as my first answer --

14) A solution to all of our environmental problems?

Depends on who and how defines this, but probably yes, as long as we mean that grants a self-sustainable environment that also guarantees all the previous points; AND there's no better way to get there - then, yes, without a doubt.

I used to be very keen on self-sacrifice, but then I realized that, at least for me, that was caused by the initial assumption that my life has some very special value. After fully accepting that my life has no value at all, and I'm just some biomass with no significance whatsoever, I began viewing life more as a task of doing your best, for the sake of nothing better to do. ^^ In that sense, some of the quick-to-sacrifice ideals I have considered in the past, now don't look optimal enough to me. That probably doesn't apply to other people, only to me, but I feel I won't be doing a possible sacrifice out of very good reasons, and it would be a waste, instead of at least trying something better with it. (not that it matters much) :p

The cure for cancer already exists, vitamin b17 :p

No, to all of it.

15) To end the human race?
Haha.

No, to all of it.
I agree.

I would only take action knowing that I was giving up my life for people I am close to and love in defending them from harm. May be a shitty thing to admit, but it's the truth. I tend to believe that in regards to pretty much all of your questions, there are more options than death.

I don't believe the heroic martyr like self-concept is a healthy thing.

^^^This^^^

I'd rather live for a cause, than die for one. Selfish? Maybe, but they're all going to die any way. I could spend my life being productive for the people who aren't even born yet.

Hell no

Why should I give my life to temporarily keep some people alive when they are all going to die eventually any way?

I want to be selfish and say that I wouldn't give my life to save people by curing cancer or ending war, but I know that I would give my life to save people even if it was only one person. The thing is that I can't answer based on a number, because by answering based on a number, you are considering humans as objects. It is completely dehumanizing to think that way. I need to know the people and actually feel something for them instead of suffering from a compartmentalized martyr complex, as if treating humans like objects and aiding them objectively is really going to help with the complex at all.

I also want to add that I think the end of crime would be an evil thing indeed. Crime, as Durkheim said, is normal, necessary, and inevitable, and I think that it is also good. A world without crime would be a world where those with power are able to make and enforce laws that are completely unjust, and nobody could challenge them.

Also, the end of migraines, what the?

I just don't understand what my death or your death has to do with ending crime... Or murder, or hatred.. Or.. anything on there. Eagerness to die for a cause is not a noble thing. None of us are Christs whose deaths will restore some sort of benevolent balance in the universe..

Obviously.

But the questions are hypothetical, so I don't think that's relevant. If my death could cause world peace, I'd do it. And if someone else had this option, I'd hope they'd make the same choice. We're all going to die anyway, so if dying sooner could result in that much good, so be it. Seems a small price to pay.
