WikiLeaks

I'm all for it. If the government wasn't doing such a ruddy job this site would hardly have any attention. Also, as someone else said, if an independent group of people is doing this successfully, imagine what other nations with basically unlimited resources must be able to do?

I am honestly all for freedom to do what the hell you want. But this site puts people's (like my brother who is in the military) lives at risk. For what?

Why the hell does this site even exist? If I were a lawyer I could probably show how this site's sole purpose is to propogate and encourage treason. Shut it down. Conversely, piss off 4chan and get them to DDOS it.

I've been over it a fair bit from time to time and it's not really releasing current pertinent data as to where what or what troops are in a way that puts them in clear and present danger. Instead, it exposes bad decision making, corruption, et cetera. It's treason only for those who don't like their abuse/misuse of taxpayer money and volunteer troop lives for their own personal gain. The sort of thing Eisenhower correctly warned us against.

This time it isn't, but I have a hard time believing it will never in it's career on the web, release any pertinate information?

Besides, I don't need leaked documents to know my money is being wasted. :m186:

I'm pretty sure the first person who does would not only get expunged from the site but also be exposed and jailed. There's a reason they haven't released current military positions and operations and it's not because they don't know.

That may be true, hopefully it is.

I understand why people want to know what the government is doing at all times with 100% transparency. Nevertheless there are lots of bits of information that is kept private for a very big reason, and I find it rather pathetic that so many people can't just take that sitting down. In particular when it comes to detailed military information. The public doesn't have a "right" to know its intimant details. I really have absolutely no understanding why so many people think governments are nothing but one big giant conspiricay like out of 1984. Come back to reality people, real people just like us run it, they largely aren't evil with ill intentions, there human too.

The military serves the populace not the other way around.

to the victor goes the pen to write history. If you bury the detail of how X thousand civilians died due to our mistakes it will be as if they never existed.
I believe the "quiet war" in Laos is a good example of meddling in another nations affairs with our money without us knowing till just recently...

The military serves the state, the state serves the populace.

History isn't written by victors any more, their isn't enough control to keep tabs on all the information flying around the world.

History is written by men with varying motives and human traits.

I restate it took 50 years for the truth to come out about the war in Laos; if the government want something buried it can and will

But it's out, it didn't stay buried. History was recorded.

(could you send me a link to the story)

Its funny to watch normally rational people tear into Sarah Palin as though she was the second coming of Reagan to dismantle liberal socialist policies everywhere. Well... then again she does excite people especially the people who are growing in numbers right now like the Tea Party, who was supposed to be a blip on the radar but effectively dismantled Obamas plans by pressuring congress. But watching people tear into her, foaming at the mouth talking like school children, very interesting to watch.

I positively repped you because I do agree with the majority of the post, but I also disagree with it a bit.

There are people with evil intentions out there, and some of them(others, not myself, would say most) are in the government. They may not want to hurt us, so they may not be evil in that sense, but some honestly do not know what they are doing. For example, (and I am only taking this on hearsay of what others have told me) if people in congress really did sign in the healthcare bill without reading it, then I would say they have no idea what they are doing. And in that sense evil, as in detrimental to my view of society.

But I do agree with you that we do not need to know everything, and I personally don't need much transparency because while ignorance may not always be bliss, I hate knowing I have a problem and being powerless to do anything. (For example: Something corrupt is happening and I have no say in stopping it) we do not need to know every little detail.

Foaming at the mouth? I'm afraid you're confusing me for one of her supporters.

The military serves the populace not the other way around.

Eisenhower foresaw that that would not remain true; sadly, he was right. The populace now largely serves as a sieve for sending money to an overly bloated corporate-married military.

As to What indigo last said, I would agree some times deserve to be temporarily secret. Temporarily. To protect the lives of the operatives (spies, troops, doctors, lab technicians, etc) who are on the job while they're on the job. It ends there because our highest priority in this would is to be making friends, not enemies. If the latter is true, we are failing as a nation. REALLY BADLY.

Well, Reagan did do a pretty good job of dismantling the middle class. Working stiffs who see more of that have every right to disdain.
