What's your Obsession?

Oh Wow, you have hit on another obsession! My son Connor is a Level 6 gymnast. He has been in it for 7 years. He hopes to go to the Olympics someday. His gym will be sending one girl (possibly two) girls to the next Olympics. Have you heard of Jordan Weiber? She trains at our gym. She won the Tyson Challenge (at 16) against girls that had already competed in the Olympics.

That's fantastic!! :) Good for him! I saw the pic of him on the pommel horse and was wondering what level he was at. He looked pretty strong! Which games is he aiming for, 2016?

I watched Jordan compete (online) - She's such a strong gymnast - amazing for her age!! (I thought I heard she was 13?? lol I spend waaaaay too much time on this). In any case, definitely a powerhouse! I can't believe you know her! That's so exciting :).

What if it doesn't have a plot? Or multi stranded narrative? What if it's one of those films where nothing happens and it's just a slow, poetic meditation on the little things in life?

Then its an art film.

I can't understand why you spend millions on turning a script with no plot into a film, but then again they do that in Hollywood all the time. :m075:

Ask yourself this, would you want to take time out of your busy schedule to watch a plotless film when you could spend the same amount of money and time watching a film with a meaningful plot line?

What do you consider meaningful?

Its different for everyone. I can't be the judge of that. But thats my point.

So, a film with no seeable plot is immediately an art film? Because it deviates from the mainstream conventions in cinematic storytelling... it's an art film? What is an art film by the way? Because I'm sure our definitions on an art film are very different.

All films have some kind of narrative structure, it just might be that it's not about getting from A to B. It may not be logistically or physically palpable but it's there. To me, whether or not a film has a plotline is completely irrelevant. I mean yeah sure, a good, detailed, intricate or multi stranded plot can be enjoyable to unravel, but it seems wholly narrow minded to disregard all other films that have a more introspective, reflective or internalized story.

I'm not into mainstream storytelling in fact I despise it. :m145:

Generally An artfilm is a serious, noncommercial (outside of hollywood etc.) independently made film. Artfilms generally appeals to a niche audience. These films are most apperciated by those who have a higher level of intellect (aka smart people)

I can see where you are coming from. I can't see why we can't put the two together to create something new that can appeal to both mass and niche audience's.

Story however is a very important part of film. I believe firmly in script and indepth plot lines. A film for me doesn't have to have explosions and speical effects as such and the story line doesn't have to be complex. It just needs to fit together. The beginning of a film should capture the intrest of the veiwer, the middle should be asking the questions (getting the veiwer to think) the end should have the answers. A good film has all of these elements.

A film is like a visual novel (and should be treated like one). I couldn't read a novel that had no plot. To many films that are coming out today lack plot and allot of people to my horror don't seem to care.

Its not a matter of getting from A to B its a matter from getting from A to B to C.

I'm very open minded about what films I watch (except for gore and porno)

Just as long as they reach A to B to C, Beginning, middle and end, Im happy.

Sorry, I don't mean to bash, but as you can see I'm very passionate and obsessive about film. :m187:

Absolutely! At least it is for me, and I have seen quite a few others comment on this same thing. It can be helpful sometimes, and it can also drive you crazy. Sometimes I will have a couple drinks just to slow my mind down. It can be exhausting, especially if I'm obsessing on something negative.

We hope for him to be a level 7 by the end of the season. His new coach is pushing strength more than the old one, but he is already very strong for his age. He's the only boy on team that can do the FULL splits. He will be 19 in 2016, so probably a bit young--maybe 2020 if we are that lucky. Boys compete and peak later than the girls.

No, Jordan is 16--she looks 13 though. Very small, and muscular! It's really neat having one (possibly 2) Olympic class gymnasts at our gym. Ok, I had to do it. Here is Connors floor routine from the State Meet last year. He took 4th place on the Floor, and 3rd in the State in Level 5 All-Around.

- Trying to excel at every musical instrument I lay my hands on.
- Surfing
- Anything I can be creative in. I have new obsessions about every 2 months.
- Art
- My relationships
- My own flaws

I obsess about different things at different times. It depends on what I'm interested in at that particular time.

Music. I have too much on my hdd, I still seek for more. Sometimes I forget to listen to the sounds of nature, so I started to force myself and leave my player at home when I go for walks in parks or even when I go to a coffee shop. I realized that need to listen to human voices as well, I am introverted as it is and replacing the outside stimuli with music just makes me lock in even more than I ever should.
I also own too many players of different kinds.. I even bought a Mini-Disk player a year ago and I am still not sure what was the reason.
At least I understand what my problem is and I try to keep it in check.. I don't spend 50-90 dollars on CDs every month from Amazon.com as I used to, haha..

-sleep (I obsess over how much I get)
-Japanese (I have to revise it every so often, even if I'm piled under work)
-RPGs
-manga and anime (especially Kanon and Lucky Star at the moment)
-Doodling, I always doodle on my work.
-The future (it's a bad thing, seriously)

I've read all the harry potters recently (after everybody else obviously) and so I've been obsessed with Severus Snape. Too much. I'm currently doing a fanart of him :D and the other day I read a fanfic between midnight and 6AM non stop... I just could not stop.

I actually get obsessed with INTJs and/or dark people quite easily.

I tend to have one big obsession at a time, sometimes very random ones (I was obsessed with tennis for two or three years as a teen, wtf, Lord of the Rings, some mangas, obsessed with old U2 music too for a long time), most of the times they have to do with imaginary worlds/characters, and I take immense pleasure from sharing these obessions with other obsessed people...

Recently there's also this old post punk band called the chameleons. Amazing. That, and getting into illustration (and how to get into the online art community, should I get on deviantart or something?), Klimt, and Arthur Rackham.

currently I am obsessing over my book...Some one needs to take it away from me before I edit it to death! :m104:

Wow! Those are fantastic standings! Congrats!
Thanks for sharing. He looks pretty strong in that video. I'm mostly familiar with elite women's gymnastics, which is obviously different from junior boys :) but he seems to have a refined look, just something about the way he did his floor. I'm not sure how to capture it, but it looked good :)
