What stares back at you when you stare into the abyss?

For me it's family and a sort of kinship of the heart. The abyss is just a door, but the door has a welcome mat and there is lively discussion with good friends inside, and a toasty fire in the fireplace. I am at home there.

myself

Mal: That poor bastard you took off my ship. He looked right into the face of it. Was made to stare.
Harken: "It"?
Mal: The darkness. Kind of darkness you can't even imagine. Blacker than the space it moves through.
Harken: Very poetic.
Mal: They made him watch. He probably tried to turn away, and they wouldn't let him. You call him a survivor? He's not. A man comes up against that kind of will, the only way to deal with it, I suspect, is to become it.

The Universe.

I recommended this TED video to someone a few minutes ago for stroke information. Jill tells the tale of how she had one and remembered all the details. I do believe she stared into the abyss and found what was there.

Love this video, having been there, though my experience was slightly different. Still, my answer would be the same: everything, all possibilities...the Universe
