Food Warning: High Fructose Corn Sugar

Update:

This article lists some brand name food/beverages which tested positive in the recent HFCS/Mercury study:

"Meanwhile, another story involving food safety has just come to light. A pair of new studies has revealed traces of toxic mercury can be found in many popular foods containing high-fructose corn syrup. The sweetener has become a widely used substitute for sugar in processed foods, including many items marketed to children. Items found to contain mercury include Hershey’s chocolate syrup, Smucker’s strawberry jelly, Hunt’s tomato ketchup, Coca-Cola Classic, Quaker Oatmeal to Go, Nutri-Grain strawberry cereal bars. Mercury is considered toxic in all forms, particularly dangerous for children."

Rest of the story here (which also includes info on the Peanut/Butter Salmonella scandal, revealing the company knew about the salmonella, and had not been inspected by the FDA since 2001):

I'm really building up a head of steam now. Several of my friends are now pondering the links between the increasing number of autism diagnoses and the mercury (among other toxins) in HFCS.

So I looked up Mercury Toxcity... and the first thing I thought was WOW. No wonder so many people (children and adults) are being diagnoses with ADD/ADHD. Back in CT, it was reported that 1 in 3 children in public schools were taking medication for Attention Deficit disorders. These are the same kids bringing soda to school in their lunches every day.

Check it out from the International Center for Nutritional Research:

I wonder if maybe a portion of kids who were diagnosed as ADHD/ADD were actually mercury toxicity sufferers.

Especially since the effect mercury has on children is so much more pronounced than the same amount of exposure to mercury on an adult.

How many generations have been mercury poisoned by the capitalism drive for profit? And still, in spite of all of this this isn't front page news. I don't see any stories about it in my local papers, and I am not seeing Dateline, or 20/20 or even a local news station.

Where is the recall on these items? OH! Thats right, if it were to become common knowledge that these companies were poisoning the populace, the companies selling these products would be in for lawsuit after lawsuit effectively bankrupting the companies. And NO one wants that.

Whatever, I learned something from the Planet Earth episode about the rainforests.

In the Jungle, the death of the big trees has a positive and necessary effect on the forest as a whole. It creates holes that allow the sunlight to reach the floor and a whole mess of new plant life springs up.

Let the big companies fall. It'll make holes for people with new ideas and maybe some ethics and morals to fill the gap. There is nothing that the current institutions are doing now that couldn't be done by someone else.

Just like the wildfires are necessary to clear out many seasons of thatch from the plains in order for the grass to thrive again, it's time to burn out the corruption from our industries, our businesses and corporations.

It is a nasty vicious cycles but it seems that we as humans can't learn from our history in order to make a better future. So we'll just have to deal with the cycles we know.

Bah...I just derailed your thread...Sorry Zen...

Rant over.

Heck no, you didn't derail it. You've kept it alive :)

Thank goodness Mountain Dew isn't on there. I was very worried. It's my only vice, don't take it away!!! ahhhh!

Sorry dude. The Dew Has Da Mercury.

Mountain Dew lists its ingredients as:

  • Carbonated water
  • High fructose corn syrup (HFCS)
  • Concentrated orange juice and other natural flavors
  • Citric acid
  • Sodium benzoate (preserves freshness)
  • Caffeine (55.2 mg per 12 oz.)
  • Sodium citrate
  • Gum arabic
  • Erythorbic acid (preserves freshness)
  • Calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor)
  • Brominated vegetable oil
  • Yellow 5

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOes.

It says only some of the corn syrup has mercury!

Lies! Deceit! I wont listen to such bull-hoggery.

*throws away Mountain Dew and cries in the corner*

*hugs you; rocks in the corner*

Sorry hon. The study cautioned against any products containing HFCS as the first or second ingredient.

If it's any consolation, I poured out three cartons of my son's favorite Lemonade (which contained HFCS and which I had overlooked). I'm now making him homemade Southern Sweet Tea with organic sugar.
