Is capitalism the best model?

It seems like something is wrong in my country. We all feel hopeless, unless you are rich. We have a culture that says, "if you don't want the job, there are a million others who would be happy to take it". There is no accountability. There is no self-esteem.

My co-worker who I have known my whole life will not teach me how to do the data storage at my company. At first he was helping me with little stuff but lately he has been ignoring my texts and calls. Once I got my hands on a storage administration book and my questions started getting more technical he stopped trying to help me.
He is scared I am going to take his job.

Nobody at my work will teach each other and we are all holding each other back. Our skilled workers refuse to teach the less skilled ones because they are afraid of losing value. I think this is one of the less obvious reasons that capitalism sucks balls. We need to find a better balance in our country, or come to a global agreement. Because the world feels like it's spiraling out of control right now.

Pollution, greed, war, and the insecurity. So many people feel useless, they feel like they are nothing more than a replaceable human resource. We need to get back to simplicity and self-respect. Woman feel like they are useless once they are out of their 20's. They see no value in age and wisdom. They compare themselves to these stupid women on TV. Men aren't men anymore, there is no honor and respect. No accountability. Men with no courage are walking around all over the place, female puppies.

What ever happened to the days when men were men and women were women???
 
I won't be in the job market until this summer, so I can't say I've seen this on the job, but at my college, there are people that will outright refuse to help anyone with anything because it would put those helped on more even ground and potentially hurt their GPA/curve grade in that respect.
This happens more when people feel threatened in some way from what I've seen. As for capitalism being the best system or not: Unfortunately, I can't speak for how other governments and job systems work in this respect as I've never been outside the U.S.
 
socialism is pretty cool, but then it kind of comes to a point where it borderlines communism and that's when it gets scary

plus,
the system undoubtedly includes taking a ridiculous amount of money from people who have earned it fair and square based on skill and dedication and giving it to people who are just plain lazy.
i understand this happens in the U.S. as well, but not nearly the same amount or to the same extent.

but i like universal healthcare. it is nice.
 
Socialism and communism are my favourite - their models IN THEORY, that is (especially in the case of communism).
 
Well, our society is based on scarcity. Which means its all competition based with high crime due to specialization and the inability to make with your own hands what is decidedly necessary for survival or functioning in the world (like owning a car). Plus, scarcity means that by making you look bad, I can be more successful. Sad, ridiculous, and definitely doesn't promote any kind of decent relationships at work.

It is sometimes argued (and I 100% agree with this) that the best societies are hunter/gatherer societies. Cutting through all the stereotypes, groups that practice hunting and gathering only have to work 15-20 hours a week gathering resources required for survival (15-20 in a desert, not even in a fertile area) compared to the 40+ required in agriculture-based societies. Not to mention, their survival hinges on reciprocity. Which means everyone stays at peace and must be on good terms so that food is continually shared. If someone is selfish or steals, they are ostracized, not given food, and pushed out of the group. So, being a selfish prick is life or death, ultimately. The diets are organic and straight off the bonfire or plant, they adore their children, spend time creating art, and mistreatment of women and crime doesn't exist due to the common goal of keeping everyone on good terms, small groups, and ability to make everything necessary for survival with your own two hands. Sign me up, please.

So while obviously I'm not about to move to the Sahara and join the Kung, screw agriculture and industrialism :)

Realistically its hard to get away from the scarcity-based model here, BUT you can pull at reciprocity strings in any society. Like if you start giving a person christmas and birthday cards regularly, they will feel inclined to reciprocate and give cards or small gifts back. So if you feel like your coworkers are being stingy with helpfulness, I'd just smother them with kindness and helpfulness until they give it back. It actually works, frighteningly enough.
 
Hell no. It rewards greed, and makes money the main source of power. It creates a pool of wage-slaves (most of us), and continuously needs to expand. When it doesn't, the masses are fucked. We can never be free under capitalism.

(And I sincerely apologize if I hurt someones feeling with the last 2 paragraph. I do understand, and highly value those who can break from the gender stereotypes, and thus create a more healthy personality. I was just simply implying the utmost grief which I feel for todays lost generation, and for those who believe in the 'new standards' which is portrayed in the mass-media.)

I have Lways found it interesting that strong capitalistic environments foster atuff competition and encouragement to try your hardest and make everything for yourself on your own. Yet, it creates laziness and can go insofar as to squelsh the effort of others to keep others at the top who got their first. It seems this happens more when environments become increasingly bureacratic. In the end it is all about captialism's goal to profit with the path of least resistance. Add burecratic ideas to the mix and you'll get extra innovation shutdown. The best example of this is the USA government.

Either way, there are some solutions. People aren't helping? Let them knowthat. If you make a voice for yourself, things have a better chance of improving.
 
Moderately government regulated capitalism seems best for me.

Anti-monopoly, anti-price-fixing, anti-price undercutting, etc. laws seem to have their place to make the market user-friendly for consumers, while allowing healthy competition.
 
No, but for different reasons. It's not egalitarian. For capitalism to flourish, there needs to be class distinction; the upper class needs the lower and middle class employees, the middle class needs upper class employers and lower class employees, and the lower class needs both middle and upper class employers.

If the upper class is saturated, there won't be any employees. If the lower class is saturated, there won't be any employers, and so on.

The hierarchical basis for capitalism is something I strongly resent.
 
Unregulated free market = shit (sorry, no other way of putting it unless its dirtier)

Regulated free market so that people don't inherently screw each other over = pretty cool

I like being able to sit on the couch and eat Wheaties. Leisure is a cool thing. The free market gives you some cool opportunities if money isn't all you care about. It's a balancing act.
 
i see healthcare and education as basically having the status of human rights but i recognise that other people do not agree with this belief of mine. it disturbs me that wealth seems to become to some extent hereditary in this sort of arrangement, and so through no fault of their own children who have not had an opportunity to earn money to take care of themselves don't get the healthcare that children with rich parents get. it's supposed to be fair but it doesn't seem that way. however i do very much believe in private property and that people should be able to accumulate glamorous worldly possessions if they find meaning in that.

Simples, because it's not that way. Healthcare, to the extent that we have researched it, should be available to all if they need it, no matter what. The reason for the research clause is that we can't do brain transplants.

however i do very much believe in private property and that people should be able to accumulate glamorous worldly possessions if they find meaning in that.

but well. i just meant to remark on the fact that capitalism is often said to be more fair because wealthy people don't get taxed and they are allowed to accumulate their wealth that they have earned. but then in the longterm it turns out to be unfair because people who haven't been born to wealth don't have the same opportunities and chances of accumulating it anyway.
