well, it's harder than it sounds because i generally do not like to be so direct as i feel a certain responsibility for that person's feelings if i were to say something that would rouse conflict. usually, my firm explanation is centred around myself and not the other person. by explaining that it is not about them, but about me, i find they accept it easier. for instance, i would emphasize my need for space and independence instead of telling them they were exhausting me. i'd let them know that i found constant company exhausting, that it had nothing to do with them, but just the fact that i am this way. although it does seem like i have something against them, ultimately it is just a clash of our differing personalities.
