Sugar never tasted so good
By The White Stripes

Sugar never tasted so good
Sugar never tasted so good
Sugar never tasted good to me
Yeah

(Interpretation: sugar meaning affection & love)

Until her eyes crossed over
Until her mind crossed over
Until her soul fell next to me

(Interpretation: friendship turning into something more)

Now
If the wrinkle that is in your brain
Has given you quite a steam
Your fingers have become a crane
Pulling on these puppet strings

(Interpretation: feeling alive, but becoming a sugar addict!)

Yeah

What a feeling that's begun
What a feeling that's begun

What a feeling that's begun
What a feeling that's begun

I felt just like a baby
Until I held a baby
What a fool this boy can be

(Interpretation: realizing the responsibility that comes along with loving someone)

Yeah

And her thoughts like a daisy
How my mind gets lazy
I must've been crazy not to see

(Interpretation: realizes he is not ready for the responsibility)

Alright

If the wrinkle that is in your brain
Has given you quite a steam
Your fingers have become a crane
Your fingers have become a crane
Your fingers have become a crane
Pulling on these puppet strings

Water never tasted so good
Water never tasted so good
Water never tasted good to me

(Interpretation: water meaning your life before you felt the sugar)

Conclusion: Love & affection is a beautiful thing, but overtime, the sugar can rot if one is not taking care of him or herself- water. The knocking refers to reality, and one is ignoring the knocking. The line "until I held the baby" refers to fatherhood (took that from someone else's interpretation). Love tests ones maturity. If we live a life of denial, we will miss out on our opportunities to grow and mature.

The Quiet Place - In Flames - (I have a couple different lyric interpretations, but I'll keep it simple for now...this is just what it means to me)

Spinning further deeper
I know you're out to try me
I'm not in this to be a slave
I push the dirt
Make me feel
Locate what swallows life
Night bird you build my world
(External influences taking up your life/energy, but there's a place to escape)

And then I close my eyes
And then I close my eyes

Judge me now
Used to be afraid to let it show, bow down
good king in my own mind
Everything is in place
So much brighter from today
(In his own mind he is king, he's unafraid of to show who/what he is - "good king in my own mind, Everything is in place...")

Drown the monster
Make all bad dreams go away
Whatever it takes to keep your hands free
Open scars
My Quiet Place
All the bridges fall to the ground,
and you say you sacrificed
(Thoughts flowing through his mind constantly, he wants his past/ bad thougts to go away)

And then I close my eyes
And then I close my eyes

Judge me now,
Used to be afraid to let it show, bow down, bow down
A king, in my own mind
Everything is in place
So much brighter from today
A king in my own mind

Judge me now
A king in my own mind
Judge me now
A king in my own mind
(He's free from judgement by himself/ in his mind)

Judge me now
Used to be afraid to let it show, bow down (bow down)
A king, in my own mind.
Everything is in place
So much brighter from today
A king in my own mind...

The outside world is a judgemental and harsh place; but he is able to escape this harshness/judgemental nature of it by retreating into his own mind.

I know it's hard to tell how mixed up you feel
Hoping what you need is behind every door
Each time you get hurt, I don't want you to change
Because everyone has hopes, you're human after all
The feeling sometimes, wishing you were someone else
Feeling as though you never belong
This feeling is not sadness, this feeling is not joy
I truly understand. Please, don't cry now

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you

Being like you are
Well this is something else, who would comprehend?
But some that do, lay claim
Divine purpose blesses them
That's not what I believe, and it doesn't matter anyway
A part of your soul ties you to the next world
Or maybe to the last, but I'm still not sure
But what I do know, is to us the world is different
As we are to the world but I guess you would know that

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you
Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, oh please don't leave here
I don't want you to change for all the hurt that you feel
This world is just illusion always trying to change you

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you
Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, oh please don't leave here
I don't want you to change for all the hurt that you feel
This world is just illusion always trying to change you

The name of the song is Freewill. The lyrics shouldn't need any interpretation, should they?

There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance

A planet of play things
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
'The stars aren't aligned
Or the gods are malign...'
Blame is better to give than receive

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill

There are those who think
That they were dealt a losing hand
The cards were stacked against them
They weren't born in Lotusland

All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate
Kicked in the face
You can't pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill

skippy64 Oooooh, I'm going to listen to that right now, thanks!

Winds - In all Reflections

I stand upon the portal
Mirrored in the reflecting water
Watching my own image, as I ask myself
What am I doing here?

I came slowly into the night
From unknown corners of the universe
I tried to find the ways to wander
But my mind is torn between the two

While this river flows down the past
I dream it all away - for you
While my thoughts wander into the coming
Fallen are the stars - for you

As the sun sets into the water
I dream it all away - for you
As the skies darken the world
Fallen are the stars - for you

I drive into oblivion's wonderlands
Of timeless moments in a mind's mystery joy
They came silence - as never heard before
As for the first time I heard the angels cry

---
The first stanza is simple: "We exist, but why? For what?" Drajevolitch, the primary vocalist, goes on to wander in search of the answers to these questions, perpetually torn between the fear of finding nothing and realizing he must create the answers himself. The next two stanzas deal with overcoming existential nothingness while he waits, dreaming (denying) and hoping, for meaning to reveal itself - to him and everyone else. The closing lines indicate that this doesn't (can't?) happen and he continues searching, against reason, to objectively validate his need for purpose. The very last line resounds through the song as a declaration of futility, like an indifferent shrug from the universe, to our sorrow.

"Cigarette In Your Bed"

Falling down
I like to watch you
Crawl around

Arms untied
Scratching your eyes out
With a smile
Strange stare
Strangled by the blade left
In your heart

I glide by
Slip a cigarette
In your bed

After staring at this for a few minutes, it struck me that it was written by the singer as the thoughts another person might be thinking about them. This isn't the singer writing about herself, through herself, it is her writing about herself through the mind of another person, through her own mind. This other person probably caused them pain. They probably didn't show any remorse for it. In which case, this is a pretty emotionally loaded song.

It reminds me of an out-of-body experience, or being in the presence of a specter. The first stanza implies the entity might be malevolent, but the last stanza makes it seem like a more comforting presence. It could well be about losing a loved one and coming to terms with it. The lyrics could be referring to the feeling itself, and not to any entity. The contrast between the sadistic opening lines and the sad comfort in the last three could be coming to terms with the loss. Interesting, in any case.

Go figure this one out

Spring was never waiting for us, girl, it ran one step ahead as we followed in the dance,
Between the parted pages that were pressed,
A love hot fevered like a striped pair of pants,
MacArthur Park is melting in the dark, all the sweet, green icing flowing down.
Someone left the cake out in the rain,
I don't think I could take it, `cause it took so long to bake it,
And I'll never have that recipe again, oh no!
I still see the yellow cotton dress foaming like a wave upon the ground.
Around your knees, and the birds like tender babies in your hands,
And the old men playing checkers by the trees.
There will be another song for me, for I will sing it.
There would be another dream for me, someone will bring it.
Oh, I will drink the wine while it is warm,
And never let you catch me looking at the sun.
But after all the loves of my life, after all the loves, you'll still be the one.
I would take my life into my hands and I will use it,
I will win the worship in their eyes, and I will lose it.
I will have all the things that I desire, and my passions flow like rivers in the sky,
And after the loves of my life, after all the loves of my life,
You'll still gonna be the one.
MacArthur Park is melting in the dark, all the sweet, green icing flowing down,
Someone left the cake out in the rain,
I don't think I can take it, cause it took so long to bake it,
And I'll never have that recipe again, oh no, oh no!

Lerxst Sure, if it's a song that seems easy to understand the message. I would like it if people at least mention the name to the song that they are posting lyrics to *cough* firefighter-frankie

Candlemass- Mirror Mirror

Mirror, mirror upon the wall
Magic demon eye
A realm of madness
Awakened by the call

Speak the ancient words of mages
Try to take control
The essence of evil,
A challenge for your soul

The battle of minds
The riddle the rhymes
Beware of the darkness behind
Usurped and enslaved
Redeemed and betrayed
The devil in the mirror, obey!

Iridescent pulsation light
Glowing in its heart
The surface is reflecting
Nightmares of your mind

Green mist swirling deep within
A dark dimension takes from
The grip of clawed hands drags you inside

The battle of minds
The riddle the rhymes
Beware of the darkness behind
Usurped and enslaved
Redeemed and betrayed
The devil in the mirror, obey!

Enchanted with powers to conquer your soul
Good or evil it won't mind
The mirror of darkness is blind

Feel the presence, the voice of the dark
Break the balance, intrudes your mind
Try to deny, oh master of fools
Captured forever, the loser learns the rules

Soilwork - Sick Heart River
(might be good to have song links)

Leaning against what's next to me
Have no fear, won't see
Will it eat me up or bring me down?
I'll gradually make up my mind, my mind

Revolution within myself
I'm puzzled, still overwhelmed
By the stories that you would tell
They always send me something
Revolution within myself, within myself

Let me give my best, I won't depend
This time I will make another plan to find
What's left and nothing less, still I won't tread
I'll find my own way to make it all worth while

Call, call on me darkness
Wait, wait on me, now
Won't you say, say that I'm sorry?
'Cause I won't wait

I've found another form
It's breeding life
It must have been there
The whole time when I was dead

'Cause I was pledged to emptiness
And now I've let myself
To see all the things
I just didn't expect

Still I remember, still I repent
I'd walk through the never
Despite my descent

Reborn, acknowledging
The part of me that once was lost
I have repressed, too many years
My utopia was within my grasp

Doomed in absentia
Left to be sentenced
Still rising to cherish
And all the things I have left

And all the things I have left

Call, call on me darkness
Wait, wait on me now
Won't you say, say that I'm sorry?
'Cause I won't wait

I've never been really sure about the meaning, just love this song - My own interpretation - Losing sight of your dreams and eventually finding out that they were always right within your sight/grasp... you feel sorry for your failure, but you must learn to cherish the things you have left (you can't focus on your failed dreams/aspirations).

The Trapeze Swinger by Iron and Wine

Please, remember me
Happily
By the rosebush laughing
With bruises on my chin
The time when
We counted every black car passing
Your house beneath the hill
And up until
Someone caught us in the kitchen
With maps, a mountain range,
A piggy bank
A vision too removed to mention
But

Please, remember me
Fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then
They went on to say
That the pearly gates
Had some eloquent graffiti
Like 'We'll meet again'
And 'Fuck the man'
And 'Tell my mother not to worry'
And angels with their gray
Handshakes
Were always done in such a hurry
And

Please, remember me
At Halloween
Making fools of all the neighbors
Our faces painted white
By midnight
We'd forgotten one another
And when the morning came
I was ashamed
Only now it seems so silly
That season left the world
And then returned
And now you're lit up by the city
So

Please, remember me
Mistakenly
In the window of the tallest tower call
Then pass us by
But much too high
To see the empty road at happy hour
Leave and resonate
Just like the gates
Around the holy kingdom
With words like 'Lost and Found' and 'Don't Look Down'
And 'Someone Save Temptation'
And

Please, remember me
As in the dream
We had as rug-burned babies
Among the fallen trees
And fast asleep
Aside the lions and the ladies
That called you what you like
And even might
Give a gift for your behavior
A fleeting chance to see
A trapeze
Swing as high as any savior
But

Please, remember me
My misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain
And chasing trains
The colored birds above there running
In circles round the well
And where it spells
On the wall behind St. Peter's
So bright with cinder gray
And spray paint
'Who the hell can see forever?'
And

Please, remember me
Seldomly
In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees
You turn from me
And said 'The trapeze act was wonderful
But never meant to last'
The clown that passed
Saw me just come up with anger
When it filled with circus dogs
The parking lot
Had an element of danger
So

Please, remember me
Finally
And all my uphill clawing
My dear
But if i make
The pearly gates
Do my best to make a drawing
Of G-d and Lucifer
A boy and girl
An angel kissin on a sinner
A monkey and a man
A marching band
All around the frightened trapeze swingers

Na-na
Na-na-na
Na-na
Na-na...

--------

I love this song because it's one of the only songs that I've found that, to me, tells a simple story without trying to be metaphoric or sneaky. To me, it's just a man who worked in a circus as a trapeze swinger and is now on his death bed. He's looking back over his life, remembering the love he once had, the pain he felt when she left him. He's welcoming death. He describes wanting to see the pearly gates and angels kissing on sinners. I love the simplicity of the song. It hardly tries to rhyme and all the verses are different. There's no break or bridge. It's constant, like life.

Endersgone Nice idea: provide a link for the song. That song sounded really grudgey btw, but the expression was very real as well. Sometimes it's hard for me to listen to that stuff, as it really makes you think.

PrincessFirefighter I like your interpretation. And no way, I like Iron and wine too!

Casting Crowns - Somewhere In The Middle
(vid provides lyrics)

First, I want to say, this is a band my brother introduced me to. It's a Christian band. I was turned off by the sound of it at first, but this particular song is something I can relate to. I feel like I'm searching and not finding any answers. I feel like I try too hard to be spiritual, and I'm too hard on myself when I feel nothing. I'm constantly worrying about what's best for me, and what path should I take? This explains exactly that feeling (fearing of the unknown). How did we get here, and how do we know where we are going? Somewhere in the middle, you'll find Him.

I like this particular line because it sounds poetic:

Fearless warriors in a picket fence, reckless abandon wrapped in common sense
Deep water faith in the shallow end and we are caught in the middle
With eyes wide open to the differences, the God we want and the God who is
But will we trade our dreams for His or are we caught in the middle

Just how close can I get, Lord, to my surrender without losing all control

Cold - Cure My Tragedy (A Letter to God)

Remember all the times that we used to play?
You were lost and I would save you
I don't think those feelings will ever fade
You were born a part of me
I was never good at hiding anything
My thoughts break me
Do you understand what you mean to me?
You are my faith

[Chorus]
Won't you cure my tragedy? [x2]
Don't take her smile away from me
She's broken and I'm far away
Won't you cure my tragedy? [x2]
if you make the world a stage for me
then I hope that you can hear me scream
Won't you cure my tragedy?

When I sit and think of the days we shared
and the nights you covered for me
Every little thing that I ever did
You would stand by me
Everytime you cried it would take my wind
My heart would break
If I could be strong like you were for me
You are my faith

[Chorus]
Won't you cure my tragedy? [x2]
Don't take her smile away from me
She's broken and I'm far away
Won't you cure my tragedy? [x2]
if you make the world a stage for me
then I hope that you can hear me scream
Won't you cure my tragedy?

Can you hear me scream? [x2]

[Chorus]
Won't you cure my tragedy? [x2]
Don't take her smile away from me
She's broken and I'm far away
Won't you cure my tragedy? [x2]
if you make the world a stage for me
then I hope that you can hear me scream
Won't you cure my tragedy?

I can't take this anymore
I can't feel this anymore
Won't you take and give her pain to me
'Cause my whole life I've made mistakes
Can you hear me scream? [x2]

I believe the real message here was the vocalist asking god to help him when his younger sister was sick/dying from cancer... anyway It's quite a song and there's parts that I can relate to my own understanding of life/religion.
