How to identify bad people

There are too many levels to the term “bad” for me to really nail it down, but I guess I chiefly associate it with tendencies toward extremes in areas like sadism, narcissism, or selfishness. I would also consider lack of empathy as (@acd mentioned) to play a part in this where being unrepentant or taking joy in negative results of related acts against others is particularly abhorrent.

I do believe in the potential for bad people to change, but I don’t think there’s any guaranteed way to impose such a change externally. It is sometimes the case with, for example, the convict who is broken by the weight of time incarcerated, but often times that same environment can lead people to step up their game in negative ways.

Observation of how people treat others will often provide indication of a person’s motivations but sometimes we are placed into situations where we must choose to be (relationships) or are required to be (work) vulnerable, and so we end up having to find out firsthand for better or worse.

Hello,
I am a sociologist and I believe there are no "bad" people out there. The notion of "bad" is a subjective enterprise developed out of your life experience. If anything, we are all but diverse and colourful human beings with our own unique value systems, that we are socialised with and have come to internalise as our own. The conflict in value systems with another being gives way to a perceived "bad" tagging, don't let it deceive you. Cheers!
