I think it's important because the gay community rarely receives the attention it deserves, and these numbers highlight a particular niche of the queer community that remains closeted. This isn't to say they should have a spotlight focused on them or that all of them necessarily wish to, but the reality is that many of these athletes do not lead private lives out of genuine choice and having to choose between being able to pursue one's passion and/or career and be treated with respect and acceptance by one's society should not be mutually exclusive possibilities, imo. Or having to go to great lengths to keep one's romantic life a secret ought not, imho, to be the requirement to remain safe, out of jail, and/or alive, as is the case for some athletes.
