As a musician, nay even a composer of music, I wonder how I've managed to get by so long never having even heard of dark music.

Okay,. so then I clicked on the OP's link to the segment of Batman theme and listened for a bit. Then I did a search at YouTube on the term 'dark music' which revealed a large number of hits, several of which I listened to. Geez, a genre, and one that I wasn't even aware of.

Look, to me, most of the dark music I listened to just now could be most usefully described as 'dynamic soundtrack, where bass registers predominate, often with a strong, marshal-like beat.' I emphasize soundtrack because this is the area -- or arena -- where music like this is most often successfully employed.

Now having written the above, and again, writing this as a composer, just let me say that this is also a type of music that I am very interested in adding to my skill set. Not just because I enjoy it, but because writing effective, dynamic musical scores can be a nice, fun way to make a very good living.

Give it a little time. The intro is about a minute and 10 seconds long before it drops into the good part.

I am sure you have never heard anything even remotely close to this.

This is so familiar to me. I watched a few more Hatsune Miku videos and again they were weirdly familiar. I'm not sure why though.

I really like dark music. It's like anti music in a way. It doesn't communicate anything positive but is still very powerful. If that's the music you are into, I would recommend:
Throbbing Gristle. A 70's band that invented the industrial genre. They are the godfathers. Their music is abrasive, abstract, dismal, hopeless, depressing, intentional.
From one of their great albums. This one is called "Weeping" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To9i0pK3h08

Then there is this particular song that I LOVE because of the theme it communicates. It's like a massive dark ominous factory building machines of war.

"Karjalan Sissit - Haarschnitt"

There is an artist named Venetian Snares who makes very intense aggressive electronic music. He uses a lot of sounds from all over the place and combines it with very aggressive drum lines.
This is a song he created called "Aaperture" which if I remember correctly had samples from a movie about a serial killer named Jeffrey Dahmer. It's off the album "Meathole"

In case you're wondering, the photo is of his armpit.
