Dark music

Yes, I do, some times. Why? Who knows?

Somehow I totally enjoy dark music. Not necessarily metal, although I do like some metal stuff. But music like the soundtrack to Dark Knight (http://youtu.be/DOq2OAwkefY?t=2m56s) totally gets me.

I wouldn't call that music on the video dark. I think it's better called 'epic'.

Anyhow, that Dark Knight theme is almost identical to "Freedom Fighters" by "Two Steps from Hell", on that well known video of the Earth from space:

this thread made me wonder what dark music entitles.

how would you define it?
 
Also wondering the definition of Dark Music. I mean, I could list Danny Elfman soundtracks galore... love all of them, but some of that is kind of "fantastically whimsical" more so than "dark".

Listening to this right now, might be "Dark" I guess; a song about losing your dreams and talents.

What? The two aren't that close o.o

The Dark Knight theme has way more tension in the way the scale progresses. This Freedom Fighters song has more moments of resolution which is what gives it the epic feel.

A lot depends on the scale and what note a phrase ends on. Specific notes end it with tension and dissonance, while others end it with resolution and harmony.

Exactly what I was thinking. Is dark music moody and loud? Is it about painful emotions? Is it a particular genre or just a general theme?

Dark music usually makes me feel a little creeped out. This song is a perfect example.
Part of me likes it for a second. I also think the musicians are incredibly talented and entertaining. Especially the bald guy.
And they've gotta have some incredible neck muscles.

Yeah, I was a big Maiden fan for a while.

I like horror soundtracks and sounds too, like Nox Arcana.

A trick I use to figure these things out is to imagine a scene and fit the music to it. If you can fit it to a dark scene appropriately then it is dark music.

What's a dark scene? Use your imagination.

I can fit any music to a dark scene such as

If it's not for ironic or dissonant purposes then it probably just means that you aren't all that culturally/emotionally attached to the scene or the music, or both.
