To be honest, I'm more weary around those that profess to be Christian over those that don't, usually because most of the Christians I meet are modern evangelists who live by half truths (the world is 5000 years old, ...)

I guessed correctly before I even read the artical that the guy was schizophrenic. The first thing that went through my mind was the verse "if your eye offends you, pluck it out" and realizing that a schizophrenic could only take that literally. Also, I don't think I've ever read a story about severe self-mutilation (like cutting off your testicals or your breasts) that haven't involved schizophrenia, usually along with voices telling them to. Lighter forms of self injuring (like cutting) are more likely to be BPD. Rarely you will find someone with OCD that self injures, and I'm sure there are other less common forms. The one thing all this has in common is this: people who injur themselves are nuts. The religion thing is not a major factor.
