But even in the sense of desiring consistency, is it still a valid sort of argument to make to imply that everything has to be consistent or none of it's true? Especially in the case of a book, even if it wasn't the bible, if you were reading a nonfiction book on spiders and one of the things stated was symbolic language and if it were stated to be a fact it would be out of context, whereas the rest of the book all said what it meant, would that still be a valid conclusion to make?
Well, the context is, that the guy was critiquing how religious people will say that when references like how you should stone people who cheat to death are 'taken out of context' and don't mean what it literally says. He said on the other hand phrases like 'love your neighbor as you do yourself' aren't ever said to be taken out of context and they're acted to be literal, so he said religious people can't have it both ways, that if one of the things are taken out of context then all of it has to be taken out of context or none of it is. I thought that was the stupidest argument I'd ever heard. Just because one things is false doesn't prove everything else is.
hey, off the top of your head, do you know if there's some name for a type of fallacy where the person posing the argument is basically saying: if this particular fact is false, then everything (including the rest of the facts) have to be false
