I am pro-socialism!
I am for slavery!
Drugs should all be legal!
PS3 is superior to Xbox360!
We need less police!
Unions strangle profitability and work ethic!
Welfare should be ended!
Abortion should be illegal!
homosexuality is a choice!

Are all claims people make which are open to debate, argument and ridicule. We have no need for respecting these views if we disagree, and disagree many of us shall... why then does Religion get a pass?

Why is it expecting in this day and age, that any claim (save religion) has to be backed up and defended. Why does religion get a pass?

I feel no need to honor and respect peoples religious views anymore than I do that homosexuality is a choice or abortion is murder, these are stupid claims, and I feel no remorse in calling them exactly that. Stupid, and based on ignorance. Only when I say that about those claims, people say, well he is passionate and I guess he is entitled to his argument. But as soon as we say something like "faith is synonymous with blind belief" and blind belief is not a good way to live, we are suddenly OGRES trying to destroy the fabric of reality.

I am sick of this "we must respect religious beliefs" mantra.

Religious people hold the reigns of power, they are NOT victims. They cannot be victimized on a systemic level the way they pretend to be. That is an absurd notion. Meanwhile they are forcing laws onto people via the courts and government that have absolutely NO merit in reality outside of their narrow dogmatic belief structure. Its bullshit, and I propose the idea that religion is just another (bad) idea that is VERY open to ridicule and argument. It belongs in the mental rubbish bin with other outdated methods for understanding. It was useful once upon a time in barbaric times, no longer is it needed.

It isn't religious belief that should be ridiculed. It is the tendency of religious types to think it is somehow wrong to question their belliefs

This is pretty much what you said anyway but I think this is a more useful way of thinking about it

Agreed. To me Religion supports all of the fallowing; mindlessness (god or other deities will provide guidance and fix problems thus allowing someone to not be proactive), deferring of moral issues (sense there is an afterlife people are dealt with at death and not during the action), Ignoring of facts (being gay being a choice, ecte), ignoring the separation of church and state, and a lack of individual strength in dealing with reality. In that people can't deal with the hardships of life so they chalk it up to gods plans , no matter how awful the reality may be. All of these problems allow someone to not think for themselves. They simply fallow what others tell them to or what they think is religiously appropriate.

@Billy In a utopia people wouldnt be disrespectful. So the fuck what people do stupid stuff, make stupid laws, hate people. That would happen even if religion wasnt here. You dont have to exacerbate it or cry about it. Whining isnt gonna do anything except make things worse in your mind.

Maybe youre jealous of the peace of mind some attain with religious revelations, or the power they have over their own life, their freedom, who knows. Dont hate the player, hate the game. Dont be mad others are winning and you havent figured it out yet.

This is a funny, relevant quote from urban dictionary:
Do not fault the successful participant in a flawed system; try instead to discern and rebuke that aspect of its organization which allows or encourages the behavior that has provoked your displeasure.

I understand and relate with everything you said, OP. I'm pretty sure it's going to always remain this way or at least a few more hundred years... not everyone can evaluate themselves and the universe the way others can. That doesn't mean we should give up though, it's just a tragic situation.

Have I wronged you in your eyes? Take it one step at a time billy and stop assuming so much and you'll have a better understanding of how to work the system to avoid the pain religion causes you and others. Being mindless could be a compliment in many eastern cultures for they valued the ability to shut off the mind at will, it suggested power. Isn't the mind the greatest trap of them all?

@Kmal as long as you keep commenting, billy won't calm down, and you know this.

By doing this and continously suggesting that he should follow your ideology by relaxing, without any change in outcome after every time, you are trolling.

Just like how you keep telling him that he needs to let go and stop trying to flame others in a non-peaceful way, you are pouncing on him every opportunity you can instead of ignoring him and working around him. Isn't that what you stand for?

I think he is having fun with it, I know I am. Maybe billy isn't taking this too seriously and is using this as an imagination exercise.

drugs should be legal, and socialism rules

I am on topic! To shit with respect!

Haha nice. Its pretty dumb not to respect things- don't respect your car, it will break down. Don't respect your job, you will lose it, etc, and it goes for everything. It looks like a mental lapse that can cause harm to yourself when you only think youre harming what's outside of you.

I'm not sure I agree with the religion should be ridiculed part but I do agree that in a lot of cases the Christian identity is far more political than spiritual... and it comes with an attitude that is firmly rooted in the colonial European mindset. They've been on top for sooooo long and now they're lamenting the waning of their influence on our institutions in the face of an increasingly multicultural society... which is why Christianity and xenophobia tend to go hand in hand. I've also been to churches which can only be described as cults... they choose your friends, they choose your opinions, they choose your thoughts... they also prey on the vulnerable and capitalize on things like personal tragedy, grief, etc.

It really wasn't that long ago that everyone was required to say the Lord's Prayer in school... I did it for the first 5 or 6 years of my education. There was an enormous controversy when it was decided that it wasn't fair to force people of other religions to pray to a Christian God, and again this whole 'you don't like it, get out of my country' attitude popped up, which eventually turned to whining about how it wasn't fair and how Christians are being oppressed when the official policy changed.

I do have personal issues with Christianity as a religion but they're pretty minor compared to the issues that I have with the blind leaders and followers who think that being spiritual is as simple as holding a set of conservative political beliefs and being afraid/judgmental of anything that doesn't correspond to them... they're just the most hopelessly lost kind of people.

Respect:
Deference to a right, privilege, privileged position, or someone or something considered to have certain rights or privileges; proper acceptance or courtesy; acknowledgment:
Respect for a suspect's right to counsel; to show respect for the flag; respect for the elderly.

Tact:
A keen sense of what to say or do to avoid giving offense; skill in dealing with difficult or delicate situations.

Would you be able to accept that the religious beliefs of people should be considered with tact?
I think all of those other things you listed deserve to be discussed with tact.

Respect? Possibly not.

Tact? Certainly.

In my mind this is a case of emotive semantics. Respect is too heavy a word and holds too many connotations.

If you disagree that tact can and should be used when dealing with emotive issues, religious or otherwise; I'd like to know why you feel that way.
