Just wanted to say a quick RIP to Adam Schlesinger, the singer for the band Fountains of Wayne.
The virus got him.
Their first album came out a couple years after I graduated HS so it's quite nostalgic.
You probably know them from the radio hit "Stacy's Mom", which I frankly think is a terrible song.
But that's what ends up on the radio, so, yeah.
Before the album with that song on it, they had several others and wrote the music to the movie "That thing you do." which gave them an Oscar nom.

I'm kind of conflicted. Because the US is in desperate need of PPE and I get that US manufacturers should have to prioritize the US per the Defense Production Act. It will be the same for whoever comes up with a vaccine or treatment. They will also prioritize their own people. But can't we also retool other manufacturers to make masks, too? Woah, I call pause on this one. Media took this out of context. I read the full transcript of the speech. Yes, it was wrong to use violence in this speech but this has a lot of cultural nuances embedded in it. Duterte is from the South which is where I'm from and it is in our culture to speak this way. Also, this guy was really having it with the left. The left was practically capitalizing on politics at a time of crisis, it was just maddening. Yes, I do not condone violence but there is more to this speech than where it's coming from.

The divisiveness in my country has been such a pain for a while now. Northerners do not think the same way that we Southerners do. There is much to want from the way this government handled this crisis but the language of the president is the least of our worries. It's the people that trickle down to the mayors and we have Barangay Captains or Village Unit heads that handle communities. The national government sends off rules on rationing, some captains use it and not give package goods to those who they don't particularly like, to say the least. Some citizens have taken to ambushing medical practitioners and throwing bleach at them. That's not cool. That's bigotry. Rich people are scoffing at the poor for being uneducated. Immediate cronies of the president are making such bad calls like the health secretary is said to be blocking the arrival of Chinese doctors (i presume also bigotry). I'm telling you it's a mess out here and I work for the government. I'm a government scholar. It's just crazy here. So yeah, i give the president a pass for blowing off a fuse. I hate that he gave ammunition to his detractors at a time like this but I am not surprised. Before he gave this speech, one Captain called out people to one venue to give relief goods because food is really an issue. Social distancing has been demanded by the govt so forming lines for relief goods is stupid then at that juncture, some jerk went in and dashed for the goods and then everyone else did. It was madness. It caught the military by surprise. And no, the military didn't shoot them but that was what happened which lead to the president saying this. And yes, there's a video. Again, not absolving the president but I get why he's seething.

Me personally? It's been a mess on facebook - people defending opinions and all that craze. Full Colors shining through. I think the government should handle this better but the problem is the concession given to corrupt cronies. That is my issue. Politics is laid with stupid imbeciles with crap agenda. The Dutertes play dirty to a certain and degree and that's what put them in that conflict in the first place -- party politics that put incompetent leaders on the tab. I think this country is too used to incompetence. It's high time for higher ethical standards and I'm glad that facebook and social media has been a platform for people to speak their minds freely. Here, virality of topics actually hold those in position accountable. But it's a mess. So many different sociocultural backgrounds, so many opinions but sadly that is democracy. There really are times when a bit of communism is so appealing. I mean the case of Vietnam for example who are handling this so much better minus all this bureaucracy.

She may have her motherly merits but the political dogs and the oligarchy will use her and manipulate here as she is being used right now. Before the Duterte presidency, we were almost pushed to war against China because a group of oligarchs wanted to call dibs on drilling the oil on contested waters and used the administration to lobby against it. China has had it up to the neck with us on that one and there have been reports of harassing our fishermen already. Remember, we don't have any ammunition. We rely on America for that and Trump refused to help us on that one. Australia sent help to train our boots but that's it. Australia is also a huge trading partner for China. Honestly if that went on, I probably would be in the middle of a different war by now. It was the Duterte presidency that curbed that crisis.

Before his presidency, we were close to becoming like Latin America for all the drug trade going on here. The drug consumption has significantly dwindled down since.

Duterte is wrong to use the same drug rhetoric for this crisis but rhetoric is the least of my worries right now.

Also Jack Ma, donated test kits to us and America has done nothing so far because it's clearly busy. I can't say that would have happened if Duterte wasn't president.

The problem with democracy and a terminally ill government is that corruption is deep down in the bones. There have been evidence of drug cartels working with politicians (Leila De Lima is in prison for that). The jails were used as drug production centers. It's actually a stroke of genius because who would check the jails, right?

That said, you can imagine how rotten even our police force already is. The I'll kill you rhetoric has helped Duterte this far to put those dogs in their right places. When he came to position, he increased the salaries of the military and police so as to curb tendencies towards corruption. He was solid - serve your people or you will also be damned. It was a necessary rhetoric at that time.

Those extra judicial killings have never been proven. These murders were often done by men riding in tandem which could easily be the drug cartels in a purging cleansing ritual. The main reason people are afraid of Duterte is because back in his home turf (where I lived for at least 13 years), it used to be a drug cartel capital. It was crazy the way bodies were piling up due to crime. When Duterte came to office in that city, there were a group of vigilante killings. Soon the city came to peace. Duterte used the same rhetoric about shooting to kill and people calmed down. Soon, Davao became one of the most peaceful cities in the entire country. They say the vigilante killings were by Duterte but that has never been proven. The same is true for the nation context now. He still says this rhetoric and there are riding in tandems but since he empowered our police force, much of the drug raids and killings are actually done by the police. He has eliminated so many proven drug Lords. One city here in the south is finally freed from the Parohinog ( a drug cartel) after decades and it was only with Duterte in office and a strong military and police force. These murders could actually even be done by the cartels as an act of cleansing and cutting clean.

The problem is that lives are at stake. But drugs has been taking more lives here than normal. Drug use here is drug use in the urban poor areas. That's tantamount to drug use in the favellas like Brazil. Empower drug people with arms and that's just shit. Marawi is actually a hotbed for drugs. That's why Duterte waged war there. Isis used drugs to infiltrate our country. It is seething how drugs have taken lives... It really is a war. Just like this pandemic is also a war.

But the problems are not over. There are still corrupt people embedded deeply within the system. A lot of the poor are seething with unrest. It's chaotic to say the least.

It's really very complex to live in a developing democratic country. It's a mess in the head. Hahaha

Oh and the distribution of goods has been taken off the backs of the executive arm and he used the Department of Social Welfare and Development. So that's like a social welfare ministry. Normally, because we are a presidential system, the 275million Pesos (5.4million usd) calamity fund is distributed to Mayors but since so many Mayors and other local government units had been making cuts on the fund, he transferred it to DSWD so that's like a federal move. But we are not a federal government so a state of national emergency had to be passed at the senate just so he could make that decision.
