Celebrities With High IQs

Now that I think of it that was one of my whole issues at school. Being told there is only one way to think of things when clearly thats total BS. Unfortunately I never spoke up. I should have but when you are a kid you think adults know better. How completely and totally wrong I was.

So with all the talk about IQs, do they really mean anything? What do you think about celebrities with high IQs:

That was quite enjoyable! Great pictures.

Of the ones I recognise I can't say I am surprised. Personally I still think IQ is more about listening skills, perseverance and being able to see patterns and use them wisely before they fade.

.. but this could of course be my own bias speaking.

The second I saw Madonna on the list I knew it was bogus. Not sure how they think she has a high IQ but its like someone saying Obama has a high IQ. Not a single person I the world is going to believe it.

I don't think "high IQs" are really high anymore. They're above average at best. 140s? Not a big deal. Especially considering people often get scored to feel good about themselves and some things are going to reflect that. This is why everybody and their mother is 140+ IQ.

Not to mention some of this stuff is flubbed. An IQ of 152 at 6 years old is fantastic - at 6 years old. That doesn't stay for your whole life because that's not how IQ works. Since you're measured against people near your age group, an IQ test taken at 6 years old says nothing about you as an adult. You get a high score if you do much better than other people. You get an average score if they catch up and do just as well as you.

In summary, a lot of this is probably bunk and publicity. Chances are it's also delivered by media sources which are not qualified to understand IQ or deliver these assessments.

Madonna has worked at the top of the entertainment industry her whole adult life. Obama is the elected leading politician of one of the most economically powerful countries in the world. it seems highly probable that they would perform well on IQ tests. why do you think they dont have high IQs?

i think the list here is questionable, but celebrities still do talk about their IQs in public from time to time, and announce that they are members of mensa.

They dont use common sense when making statements.

or at least... IQ tests absolutely do not purport to measure anything like "common sense". their whole stated purpose is to measure something other than that.

where did you get this idea of "common sense"? how do you formulate it? can you test it? can you test it again and find that it has the same results across populations?

in any case, IQ tests do not measure "common sense".
Very good points. Common sense is absolute simple truths. "If you do not receive nourishment you will die." If you do not breathe, intake water you will die etc..
I suppose its possible to not have common sense and still have a high iq.

well it seems to me that Madonna and Obama continue to take in food, water, and oxygen just fine.

Surprised they didn't mention James Woods, whose IQ is close to 200. Then again it hasn't exactly helped his career.

Unfortunately yes.

LOL, you don't like celebrities much? You are hilarious!

Some have their uses.

They must have a lot of something to get to where they are?

Before her ego digested her Madonna was fab! I'll always have a soft spot for her no matter what. Loved her and still listen to her early music. Her music videos captured millions. Imagination is everything. Those who can tap into the human imagination I respect, even with their often dodgy personal lives. That is how I rate intelligence anyway. Knowing stuff means little unless it is felt and translated to what others can understand.

I don't mind celebs. Poor sods seem to have WAY more peer pressure than the average person. That's why they get screwed up on such a regular basis.

His career is not helped by Hollywood due to the fact he has come out as a staunch Republican. He is given bad guy parts these days but little else.

You are right. I was being hard on Madonna and kind to Obama. :)

I think this is one of the biggest misconceptions about IQ. We always assume that having high logical/mathematical and visual/spatial intelligence = high level of common sense, but they're not the same. Common sense is more closely linked to social/emotional intelligence and practical intelligence. I remember posting a site which lists other types of intelligence beyond Gardner's nine, but most said there were too many types of intelligence on the list that were the same. However, I think the list at least gives more options for identifying different types of intelligence. I think we still have such a limited view of intelligence that we ignore other types if it doesn't fit in these neat little boxes we have already set up.

Here's the site: http://www.co-intelligence.org/multiIntelligence.html

To me that should be just about normal stuff. They have something that they're good at and they're probably a little smart but I would say MOST OF IT is luck, charisma, and other people holding them up and helping them.

Frankly, in both cases in all likely hood their underlings that work in the shadows producing what they do are quite smarter than them but you never hear about it. We've got the producers and speech writers and engineers and PR specialists that advise them on how to best approach the public.

There's shockingly little that these two actually do by themselves.

You should start a thread about smart underlings. Tell the story that never gets heard!

yeah, youre probably right.

i just get annoyed about the IQ culture, because people tend to generalise it to other situations to which it doesnt apply. (which is probably what i did myself actually.) having a high iq doesnt mean that someone has "good ideas", or will achieve their goals, or even that they will be able to formulate long term goals. it means they are good at solving puzzles on an iq test... whatever else that means in terms of ability, which seems a little uncertain, doesnt mean they will apply those abilities to anything other than solving iq test type puzzles.
