I love exclusive clubs. Membership with them ensures a quiet drinking place when I go out, so that I'm not surrounded by a bunch of rowdies likely to start a fight when they're intoxicated.

 

As far as leisure clubs go, sounds like fun, I agree.

 

There is a huge amount of money spent on advertising and marketing to try and make British people buy cosmetics, clothes, shoes, hair styles and products, cars and certain lifestyle choices.

Television beams images of perfectly toned model types with perfect hair, teeth and clothes into peoples homes as if that is how everyone looks. Vanity it seems is good business.

Some people have been infected by this poison. But most people in the UK don't want to use their appearance as a way of exerting their personality over other people. This is changing for the younger generation though because they have grown up brainwashed by the marketing. They are more likely to be slaves to fashion and be body conscious.

There is a book called Affluenza which attempts to establish how infected people are from different countries by status anxiety.

All credit to the british for not becoming total slaves to image.

There are a few different ways I could respond to this news.

• Ignore the basic rules of statistical sampling and begin posting pictures of attractive Brits.
• Point out that while it is possible that Britons are visually less attractive, they more than make up for it in personality.
• Speculate

I think there is something of cultural interest in this though.

For example if you go to say Italy people are very concerned about making a good impression with their appearance (la bella figura).

In Britain if you wind the clock back 100 years everyone dressed exactly the same depending on their class. Now everyone is 'individual' although in reality they still wear clothing that reflects their social group or class.

In the US success is admired and people can be more brash about their success. In the UK people are more wary about stepping out of line with everyone else. There is less tolerance of pretension. I don't think that is a bad thing.

If some people start worrying too much about their image then other people start worrying about their image and you get an image arms race where everyone becomes insecure about their image!

 

Is beauty in the skin or in the soul? To turn heads or to turn hearts? You decide.
