[SUP]7[/SUP] Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. [SUP]8[/SUP] Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” [SUP]9[/SUP] “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.
[SUP]10[/SUP] He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, [SUP]11[/SUP] and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ [SUP]12[/SUP] He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”
[SUP]13[/SUP] They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
[SUP]14[/SUP] When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. [SUP]15[/SUP] And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. [SUP]16[/SUP] For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”
[SUP]17[/SUP] After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. [SUP]18[/SUP] For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
[SUP]19[/SUP] And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
[SUP]20[/SUP] In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. [SUP]21[/SUP] But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. [SUP]22[/SUP] The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!” [SUP]23[/SUP] They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
[SUP]24[/SUP] A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. [SUP]25[/SUP] Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. [SUP]26[/SUP] But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. [SUP]27[/SUP] For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. [SUP]28[/SUP] You are those who have stood by me in my trials. [SUP]29[/SUP] And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, [SUP]30[/SUP] so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
[SUP]31[/SUP] “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. [SUP]32[/SUP] But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
[SUP]33[/SUP] But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”
[SUP]34[/SUP] Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
[SUP]35[/SUP] Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”
“Nothing,” they answered.
[SUP]36[/SUP] He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. [SUP]37[/SUP] It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”
[SUP]38[/SUP] The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”
“That’s enough!” he replied.-Luke 22

People used to talk more over their meals before MacDonalds.
 
I'd blame it on the T.V. more then McDonald's, it's what caused people to stop eating at the table and started them in on the living room.

Hey it was one of the only good Jewish shows out there until they ruined it by bringing in the Roman, Joey Tribiani.

Do you wish to discuss swords?
 
I am reminded of sending them out as sheep to the wolves, which was and is part of Christian theology. However, He invested much time with this group of people and was sending them out into the world on a mission. He wanted them to prepare themselves for the many treacherous obstacles they were going to face. He wanted them to be prepared in a different manner than they had been as of late. They had their needs met for them in the present and near past, but Jesus knew His time was at hand and He would be leaving them. If they were accustomed to having their needs met, He was telling them they would have to provide because He was leaving.

The sword has caused some confusion over the years, but it need not do so. They could have been killed by thieves on the road, but it would not likely happen if they carried a sword or two with them to show they could protect themselves. These guys were trained and were an investment, and Jesus did not want them killed; they had work to do and a story to tell. They might otherwise be considered easy prey to those with ill intent. That is my take on the sword. I think each person should judge that for themselves, though, after studying it a bit.

Just to give a bit of a back drop to this discussion and context to the text as a whole, The Last Supper is the dinner on the night of the pass over and the very last gathering he has with his disciples before he is betrayed by Judas.

With that being said, I think I'll disagree with you on the nature of the "Sword." What with the apostles being saved miraculously several times, I don't think a few bandits are goign to get in there way, I"ll put my money on it meaning be prepared for hardship because there will be tons of it, and I'll chalk the 12 response up to being a bit dim.
