[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Some interesting stuff in this thread. A lot of details discussed that I hadn't picked up on.

I enjoyed The Last Jedi overall, but I've never been much of a Star Wars fan. I think the universe Lucas created is far more interesting than the actual movies themselves. And that some of the expanded universe stuff deserves more focus. I would love to see a budget that size given to the creators of Knights of the Old Republic 2. Such a deep and complicated plot woven into a sci-fi visual extravaganza. Now that's something that would make me fall in love with the Star Wars mythos.

There is one thing that really annoyed me, which also occurred in the original trilogy. Why do these insanely powerful sith die so easily? Sidious thrown over a balcony, Snokes falling for a fairly predictable plot. You can kill with a thought, toss Jedi around like playthings, fire lightning from your hands, but you can't predict such an obvious move? I know these characters aren't given much development, but they fact is that organizing an empire of that size, all that political intrigue and civil unrest. It must take a strategic genius to keep it from falling apart. And yet, the masterminds behind it prove to be stupid evil in the end. I know it needs to be that way for the plot to work, but it still annoys me.

That's it. Our sim engagement is off. Hmmph!

Probably for the best. I wasn't going to raise our children in the way of the force. All that new age crap. Not for my kids.

They'll be raised in the Vulcan tradition. Taught to suppress all emotion, and act like a condescending prick to everyone else.

You know when I first watched the scene where they found the guy with the red flower on his lapel I thought that they were going to go a different route with the story. I thought that they were going to try to talk to him but not be able to because he was in some VIP section you need a certain amount of money to get into, causing Finn and Rose to have to gamble (the whole point of having a casino scene in my mind). I thought to myself "They're gonna have invented a game of chance for the Star Wars universe which is pretty cool. Also it'll probably be a great scene when everyone around Finn and Rose are drinking and gambling and having a good time and Finn is just getting more and more frustrated because there is a ticking clock which is a nice juxtaposition from the jovial environment they are in. The guards walking up to arrest them had me convinced "Yep they're about to get kicked out of this section of the casino and this whole gambling subplot is about to begin" but then they just threw them in jail. They decided to go the saving cgi animals route with the story... okay, but I bet someone in the writers room pitched something like what i'm talking about and that's why there is a casino scene in the movie.

Overall, I did like the movie but also thought that whole part could have been done much better. I get that they were trying to show the difference in classes or the inequality (slave children) etc. etc., but was initially bothered that they freed the animals but not the kids... And then that Rose says it was all worth it to free the animals even if they don't make it back. Wut.

I guess there was no logical way the kids could have escaped and made it to safety. So their part is to stay put as slaves and eventually grow up maintaining hope needed to resist and revolt. Maybe Rose and Finn being there with them was just "The spark that will light the fire that burns the first order down." Maybe Rose and Finn figured at least those animals could escape to live in the wild. It was a bit tangential.

Well they could have written it any way they wanted to, and apparently the way they wanted to write it was to sacrifice screen time with the main plot to tell a story about animal rights... Now i'm not against social/political commentary in movies but I always felt that Star Wars was above that in a way. The writers seem to have let their personal and political beliefs seep into the story when they shouldn't have.

It was also pretty heavily influenced by WWII, and the prequels were loosely based on the Roman Republic becoming an empire. The force was loosely based on Taoism. He pulled from a bunch of different sources to make those movies. And to be fair to your point Episode III has a lot of references to the insanity of the Bush administration. But they're indirect references, if Lucas made Star Wars social commentary the same way that the new movies do he would have had Palpatine quote Bush word for word.

Well I've seen a lot of movies so I see it when someone is obviously spoonfeeding me a message or obviously trying to make me feel a certain way. These things are okay if they're subtle, and as I've seen a lot of movies subtly address things well, when it's done obviously and without much effort it bothers me a bit. If you don't see it then great, enjoy your experience, i'm not trying to take your enjoyment away from you but it's a problem for me is what i'm saying.

Omg the attention to detail, I like how they even
captured that Luke's lightsaber was one solid, strong, stable, unwavering beam of light, while Kylo's was jagged, unstable, fluctuating, tumultuous. They seemed to put a great deal of emphasis on that when I watched that scene, the difference between the two stuck out like a sore thumb.

I don't see how anyone could hate on Star Wars

Ewan is one of my favorite people and I think a lot of others feel like he was largely one of the best things about the prequels.
I think it would be great if they did a Kenobi film that was between ep 3 and 4. Filling in that gap a bit more. I think at least one film set in this time would be very successful.
Bringing him back as a force ghost would be cool as well. But I feel like if they did that, I'd really want to see Qui-Gon as well. And Anakin.

This interview is adorable. Especially the mint part.

"There's some speculation that you'll be playing Carl Jung..."

"HAHAHAHA! .... Oh, that's cool."

I've been such a fan of his since Trainspotting back in the day. He's always seemed just so normal and a guy you'd just want to hang with. I would absolutely love to see him don the Kenobi robes once again.
