Realpolitik vs. Idealpolitik

I read once in a book by the German Theologian Hans Kung that he reckoned the church had done a bad job of navigating between these two seperate poles, what do you think is the worse for the world? When world leaders or regimes err in one direction or the other? Is it bad for just their nation or bad for everyone and why?
