I am tired of this!

This thing has beaten me sideways. Each new thing I fix is great, but it's not solving the initial problem: No sound! I installed Ubuntu on my mother's computer about six months ago, but it never connected the sound card drivers as far as I can tell. She's been letting me borrow her laptop for the past few days and while she doesn't care about sound that much, I do. And I can't figure out how to install the windows sound card drivers since I did an upgrade install of Ubuntu 9.10.

This is a clear case of having too much intermediate knowledge, and not enough advanced knowledge.

Heck, if I could install Windows 7 cheaply I would. At least then it would reset the thing since she originally had XP.

What do you think, guys? Should I:

A) Search for the dang drivers or
B) Break down and buy Win7, and do another fresh install?

Or is there a C) option?

FYI, the sound card is an ST-AC9250 (StigmaTel) and something else came up when I ran Terminal: Si3054.

Any answers? Anyone know what I should run in Terminal to get the sound card to work?

I feel like this: :m071:

my husband works on Ubuntu all the time. He just installed 9.10 the other day. He says you need to go into system, admin, sound. Use the drop down to select open sound system drivers. They should already be in there. There was some issues on 9.10 with getting sound system to work. Do google search for "sigmatel ubuntu" and you should be able to find if there is an issue.

There is a bug on the ubuntu site for that sound card in 9.10 Is your laptop a gateway??

YES! And Enty, I wish I *could* find the drivers - they're not in the menu at all. :( But I'll keep checking.

he said check preferences. There was a big issue with sound card drivers on this version. Hes going to do a search for you too!

Wait to see what Entyqua's hubby says. I would say it would be worth at least waiting for a while to see if they fix the bug. There is also potential for a PCMCIA sound card or USB, but make sure you do your research on one with the right chipset, sounds like you already know what you are doing though.

How much does win7 retail cost?

It is in system, preferences, sound. There should be three drop boxes. Should be a test button. Try all the different drivers with the test button to see if one of them works. If not you may need to install the alsa mixer.

Tell him thank you! Also, in preferences there's nothing that comes up under the input/output tabs. It's blank. I've tried testing the sound using different defaults, but only the "Dummy" default radio button is available. It's a bit of a puzzle.

And thanks, NAI for the new trail to follow! From what I can tell, I might need to update the ALSA...but that's getting a little too deep for me. I'm not sure what to add to the terminal there. If it's not copy and paste, I'm definitely out of my league.

Ok well get it for you to copy and paste lol

Hmm...I just get sound preferences, with multiple tabs. The hardware and input tabs have nothing under them. The output tab has "Dummy" but nothing else? That's why I'm thinking I need to reinstall ALSA...but can you ask your bubbehleh which alsa...? :D

Just go into synaptic and search for alsa. I can't remember which menu synaptic is in, been a while since I used Ubuntu.

Go into the terminal
type "sudo apt-get install alsa-oss"

hit enter it will ask for your password same as log in

then go into preferences and try again

if that doesnt work in the terminal type
"modprobe -l | grep snd"
and see if you get anything there.

also try in terminal
"lspci -v | less" and look for audio section and copy and paste here if you cant get any of the above to work...

let us know! Copy and paste whats in the quotes not the quotes!

Grumble mumble...but they were great ideas! Tell him *something* installed, but it might not have worked. Here's what came up with the very last test (less):

those were all video, after the reboot go back into sound do tests again because reboot should have installed the sound drivers. let us know..

Bleech.

Okay, here's what's coming up so far (maybe your hubby can see something I'm missing):

go to terminal and type "sudo killall pulseaudio"
