I don't think that's the case at all. Not saying that it doesn't help when it comes to a hard break up but I believe it has something to do with poor judgment. When people let feelings get involved when trying to find a mate they forget about the main factor that determines the success of a relationship, compatibility. Of course there isn't one person out there that is destine to be with another but there are several persons out there that is compatible.
