but one has to wonder at the coincidence and ponder the possible synchronistic meanings.

Don't even try to compare Natural disaster to revolution.

You know, the Earthquakes in Japan kill only a handful of people if anyone at all. Wanna know why? Because people anticipate and prepare for them. The massive loss of life wasn't from the earthquake... It was from the 10 to 15 meter tidal waves washing inland at 80km per hour. You try to out run that. And you try warning people about something that moves 800km per hour out in the open ocean.

Earthquake preparation is one thing. Tsunamis are a whole 'nother game.

My suspicion is this what you are seeing is the combination of two factors:

1. There are more people alive today than have ever lived in all of recorded human history
2. Cheap and easy mass media allows to see a very large portion of all goings' on.

All in all, the actual incidence of disasters is probably relatively unchanged vs. geologic history, and increased incidence of human disaster is due to increase incidence of humans existing in a very limited space with very limited resources.

Water will boil at room temperature in a vacuum. External influences often have no influence when a vacuum is left. Properties change, and what we think may not always be what will happen with extreme change. It may take a few, or even many, years for the Arab world to solidify into a part of the world that can live in peace. Unfortunately, external forces are trying to change things inside the vacuum. Tribal aspirations of power brought by the sword will be vanquished. Youth that wanted change will not be the ones stopping the tribal battles. Much has to be done, but it must come from an internal source. What is currently happening in Yemen and the Arab Summit may well pave the way for a future Arab world. External influence must be stopped at all costs.

An earthquake caused changes in properties that influenced normal states of affair. It would be considered by insurance companies as an act of God. That was horrible. Could that be considered as outside influence?

I see no commonalities in the events that started the two tragedies.
