i will proooooobably be the only one using this thread, but in case there's a small chance that there is someone else here who likes phonk ~ i would love to hear your finds :>

i have a phonk playlist on spotify i've been building for a while, so i'll likely start there

the playlist in question:

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2k9a47PUqatFXQPRdoHyST

You've probably already heard everything I've come across
And I think our preferences differ a bit
But I dig some phonk/phonk adjacent stuff out there

Our preferences might not differ as much as you think, because I love both of these :p the first one is very aligned with my phonk leanings circa 2021-22 or so. Second one is very much my phonk leanings now! They're both bomb af tho omg, tysm!!!!!

I listen to a lot of electronic music, a lot a lot, and I'm open to pretty much anything

I appreciate phonk as a style but I don't listen to a lot of it. I can't get past the ubiquitous distortion.

But that whole digital-nihilism-DIY-cyberpunk-anarcho-black-pill-bedroom-production thing is near and dear to my heart, so I 'get it' in my own way.

I'll click around the playlist, though and see what's up.

There are quite a few different flavors of phonk, so if you go digging for long enough you might find something palatable

Spotify's phonk playlist, for instance, is not similar to mine at all:

They've been focusing on funk automotivo for a while now - it's the big thing, what the crowd favors at the moment. At the start, it was primarily drift phonk. I find that list a little disappointing. It lacks variety. I did start a funk automotivo playlist, but there isn't much in there yet

The distortion is something I enjoy very much, so that's a plus for me. I also love the use of Memphis rap samples, so there's probably a lot of that in my list. Phonk at the start was more chill, less aggression. Some of what I have saved might not even sound like phonk to people, if they're used to the aggressive gym bro stuff (I also love the aggressive gym bro stuff). One more thing to note ~ cowbells. Big fan

I poked around youtube and these are alright:

Man, I just wish they'd back off the distortion on the kick drum. Everything else, I can live with -- the crusty melodies and basslines and samples. But anchoring it to something clean, like a typical house style kick drum, with 'clicky' transients and a brief, punchy body would help, imo.

That's just me, of course. I will talk about these things all day.

The overall aesthetic is cool, though.

Dig the last bullet quite a bit. I've found a lot of versions of that song, but I can't think of them off the top of my head right now. This comes to mind, but not quite right

Have you tried midtempo bass before? The first one makes me think of it a little bit. Not an exact match, but something about it

I have a couple different lists for midtempo bass, although the contents of the list occasionally veer off course from what could be considered midtempo

I'm trying to stay on topic with phonk, sorry, just keep wanting to go off in different directions. As soon as I mentioned midtempo bass I wanted to talk about other electronic music I love that goes hard. Rawstyle, hardstyle, hardtekk, hardcore, hard industrial techno, etc.
