After I got into the violin last spring, I found I started really enjoying the intensity of clear, sad music. I used to be very into aggressive and angry music like metal, but now that emotion is becoming much less appealing (and with it, all that music I've got).

Song or band recommendations would be great, as well as just posting melancholy music. Here's some good ones:

The "sad violin" sounds wonderful. Very passionate melody.

I've always liked Kenny G's Sister Rose which i posted in "Instrumental Music" section.

One of the best. It is the most melancholy piece I can think of right now:

This one's kind of hard to hear though. You might need to turn the volume up a little.

Yay for getting into the violin. :D and I hear you on the attractive feel of that melancholic sound. Here's one of my favorite

Also, this ones's a beauty. It has a lil bit of vocals as background. Enjoy.

This one sounds like something right out of .HACK//Sign ... but if we're looking for violins, here's another anime bit: (epic violins toward the end, but the duration 'till then is good enough to make the wait worthwhile.)

Nothing speaks to me quite like a shakuhachi does. It's almost as if the instrument itself is weeping.

I went down the same path, and threw out most of the stuff I had several years back. I'll post one of my favorite melancholy songs. Since my tastes are a bit strange and since this is such an old recording, I'll post the lyrics, should anyone have trouble hearing all of them.

In particular, I find the first refrain by the Waring Girls in this melody to be particularly haunting, considering the message communicated and the sheer age of the piece. I have italicized the particular area I am referring to below:

Dancing in the dark 'til the tune ends
We’re dancing in the dark and it soon ends
We’re waltzing in the wonder of why we’re here
Time hurries by we’re here
and gone.

Looking for the light
Of a new love to brighten up the night
I have you, love
And we can face the music together
Dancing in the dark
Dancing in the dark.

What though love is old?
What though song is old?
Through them we can be young.

Hear this heart of mine
Make yours part of mine
Dear one, tell me that we’re one.

Looking for the light
Of a new love to brighten up the night
I have you, love.

And we can face the music together
Dancing in the dark
We are dancing in the dark.

'Tis actually a bit of a lovely video IMO, once you get past, what I found to be at least, the unnecessary initial frames with the large font.
