Irrelevance of liberal, socialist and communist ideals in the modern world.

"I skimmed through this.
(aka - I didn’t read it, not worth my time.)
It was difficult to derive the relivavnt information I was looking for.
(Because I didn’t read it and what I “skimmed” didn’t jive with my specific viewpoint even though I just went off about people supposedly “not reading all the information posted")

Did you agree to stop attacking me personally?
(^^^^ Never was, that’s all in your head, though all three of your sentences are once again, thinly veiled insults.)

Still waiting for the mystery post! *excited*

Ok.
We have nothing to talk about.
Before I stop looking at all of your posts yet again let me leave you with this.
There is more than enough content from you to accurately label you. It would be harsh and real and would make you feel terrible.
However there's simply no reason to do it. There's no reason not to allow you to live in the fantasy world you choose to live in.
With these last words to you let me again reiterate my hope you live in happiness and prosper.
Have an excellent and fulfilling life.

Oh...okay then.
Thanks so much for sparing me!
You’re so kind and generous (and brilliant! You have me completely figured out by forum posts alone, pretty amazing deductive skills!)....I’m sure I would run right off and kill myself due to the harsh burns, reality checks, and exposure of the lies that you are withholding out of the kindness of your heart.
Well bless your heart. :kissingheart:
But you won’t show or tell, out of the fear you have that I would be irrevocably butt-hurt and that would hurt your heart to hurt my own so....I didn’t know you cared so much...*swoon*.
Again..wow...thanks man...so cool of you to threaten me and then play the humble protagonist while you once again pretend not to insult me by saying I’m living in a “fantasy world”. (Okay, Mr. God-killer)
This is ridiculous.
Please put me on ignore, you obviously cannot view my posts with any sort of objectivism...but in that case, maybe you should put everyone on ignore.
:expressionless:
Adios then.

The Myth of Scandinavian Socialism
Corey Iacono

1-shutterstock_346489028.jpg

Bernie Sanders has single-handedly brought the term “democratic socialism” into the contemporary American political lexicon and shaken millions of Millennials out of their apathy towards politics. Even if he does not win the Democratic nomination, his impact on American politics will be evident for years to come.

Sanders has convinced a great number of people that things have been going very badly for the great majority of people in the United States, for a very long time. His solution? America must embrace “democratic socialism,” a socioeconomic system that seemingly works very well in the Scandinavian countries, like Sweden, which are, by some measures, better off than the United States.

Democratic socialism purports to combine majority rule with state control of the means of production. However, the Scandinavian countries are not good examples of democratic socialism in action because they aren’t socialist.

In the Scandinavian countries, like all other developed nations, the means of production are primarily owned by private individuals, not the community or the government, and resources are allocated to their respective uses by the market, not government or community planning.

While it is true that the Scandinavian countries provide things like a generous social safety net and universal healthcare, an extensive welfare state is not the same thing as socialism. What Sanders and his supporters confuse as socialism is actually social democracy, a system in which the government aims to promote the public welfare through heavy taxation and spending, within the framework of a capitalist economy. This is what the Scandinavians practice.

In response to Americans frequently referring to his country as socialist, the prime minister of Denmark recently remarked in a lecture at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government,

I know that some people in the US associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism. Therefore I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy. Denmark is a market economy.

The Scandinavians embrace a brand of free-market capitalism that exists in conjunction with a large welfare state, known as the “Nordic Model,” which includes many policies that democratic socialists would likely abhor.

For example, democratic socialists are generally opponents of global capitalism and free trade, but the Scandinavian countries have fully embraced these things. The Economist magazine describes the Scandinavian countries as “stout free-traders who resist the temptation to intervene even to protect iconic companies.” Perhaps this is why Denmark, Norway, and Sweden rank among the most globalized countries in the entire world. These countries all also rank in the top 10 easiest countries to do business in.

How do supporters of Bernie Sanders feel about the minimum wage? You will find no such government-imposed floors on labor in Sweden, Norway, or Denmark. Instead, minimum wages are decided by collective-bargaining agreements between unions and employers; they typically vary on an occupational or industrial basis. Union-imposed wages lock out the least skilled and do their own damage to an economy, but such a decentralized system is still arguably a much better way of doing things than having the central government set a one-size fits all wage policy that covers every occupation nationwide.

In a move that would be considered radically pro-capitalist by young Americans who #FeelTheBern, Sweden adopted a universal school choice system in the 1990s that is nearly identical to the system proposed by libertarian economist Milton Friedman his 1955 essay, “The Role of Government in Education.”

In practice, the Swedish system involves local governments allowing families to use public funds, in the form of vouchers, to finance their child’s education at a private school, including schools run by the dreaded for-profit corporation.

Far from being a failure, as the socialists thought it would be, Sweden's reforms were a considerable success. According to a study published by the Institute for the Study of Labor, the expansion of private schooling and competition brought about by the Swedish free-market educational reforms “improved average educational performance both at the end of compulsory school and in the long run in terms of high school grades, university attendance, and years of schooling.”

Overall, it is clear that the Scandinavian countries are not in fact archetypes of successful democratic socialism. Sanders has convinced a great deal of people that socialism is something it is not, and he has used the Scandinavian countries to prove its efficacy, while ignoring the many ways they deviate, sometimes dramatically, from what Sanders himself advocates.

Winston Churchill aptly described socialism as "a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue [being] the equal sharing of misery." As economist Thomas Sowell put it, "Socialism in general has a record of failure so blatant that only an intellectual could ignore or evade it."

What do you think about the authorial confusion in the first few paragraphs? The author, Corey Iacono, says that Sanders promotes democratic socialism, then says that Scandanavian countries aren't good examples of democratic socialism because they aren't socialist, then says that what Sanders actually supports is not socialism but democratic socialism. Does it present any problems for you that Iacono is so intensely confused about what he is discussing? It is so obvious that he doesn't know what he is talking about. Why did you share this article, knowing that the author is so confused about what he is discussing?

Maybe you can explain the author's point of view better to me, than how I have understood it? I must have made a mistake? What do you think that democratic socialism is, what is its basic philosophy, and how does it differ from socialism?

IMO, socialism is dictatorial and all encompassing. Democratic socialism is more aligned with social programs that are chosen and implemented by the democratic process (representatives and voting). The later speaks more to the taxation without representation and gives people the perception that they are choosing what is implemented. If people FEEL like they have a choice then they are more likely to conform and contribute to the system of resource allocation. The sad part in both is that the people creating the systems are exempting their selves from the system for a more favorable option that is also funded by the masses. I say, fine, let them choose the system but everyone is in the same system (no exceptions). And those who are choosing should be forced to have complete disclosure when it comes to participation. And if it is found that their is unfair access then there should be penalties of expulsion (or worse).

Here's a humorous example but its a legitimate concern:

I have to admit what the democrats have accomplished is impressive. They have taken a plate of crap and screamed about it so much people are starting to look closely at it and think maybe there is something more substantial there than just a plate of crap.
If I were Trump in would throw every nonbias resource into the Russia investigation. Comedy should have been fired day 1. When nothing comes from the investigation turn those resources onto the real investigation of Obama spying on citizens to benefit his political party. Reopen the Hillary files and make an example out of her.

You should understand that most “Americans” have never left their own country...much less their own state in many cases.
They have no clue other than what is presented in our biased media as to how the rest of the world functions and runs.
Most people here have no idea what country follows what political ideology...and they certainly haven’t travelled there or met the people.
Derp...is my response to that article...factual information please...not speculation.
Facts.
Proof.
Something that is lacking in this thread.
The brand of “democratic socialism” that Sanders was pushing, has nothing to do with an authoritarian government that Trump seems to be more comfortable with.
It means that we are going to focus more on the people, taking care of them and focusing on improving our social institutions.
We pay a whole lot of our taxes for our military...the most by far of any country.
Sanders wants to reinstate the social programs the were so productive and well received after WWII.
I think we can all see how Trump’s version of Capitalism and “democracy” is closer to a banana republic than Bernie could ever take us.

All a matter of perspective.

All a matter of perspective.

I usually notice that when people are accusing politicians of instilling division, that kind of attitude goes together with intolerance of differences. I think that's kind of like what's happening in America now with Trump trying to boot people out on the basis of race and religion (which is also connected to the unreg-market economic situation). I think that the best thing we can do as a society is to find ways to recognise and respect and coexist with the different others around us. Politicians who are said to instill division, it seems to me that it's just because they don't want to sweep differences under the carpet and pretend they don't exist. Or maybe it's because of something more sinister - maybe they it's because they don't want to sweep different people under the carpet and pretend they don't exist.

It’s quite interesting when I can flip my TV dial from Fox News and hear them talking still about Hillary...hear them talking about “fake news” and then all the other stations are talking about WH ties to Russia and how the healthcare plans and budget are going to line the pockets of the rich.
In a recent poll of Trump’s approval rating among people that identify as Republican, showed I think it was 82% approval.
Keep in mind though, he didn’t win the popular vote...no matter what he Tweets about millions of illegal votes.
So there is some kind of disconnect or disinformation being disseminated amongst them.
And yes, you are right...this is why Trump hasn’t yet been able to implement his “travel ban” because of his own very clear rhetoric on why he was imposing it while campaigning...to keep the Muslims out.
Now they claim it’s for other reasons.
I agree with finding common ground, and have reached out many times to do just that, only to be lambasted and put down by the other poster.
It’s a bully mentality that carries over into many of his acolytes.
I think in some cases it’s because they don’t want to just sweep it under the rug....but take Trump for example - he does it, or makes insulting accusations and generalizations about whole races or groups of people...there is a far more savvy way to operate.
We are going backward as a society under his control...I think if people were more aware of what is happening politically, Trump would be done for.
The Russian ties, the money laundering, the pussy grabbing, the alternative facts, the gossiping of code word sensitive material to the same Russian diplomat who’s ties forced the resignation of Manafort and Flynn.
Firing the FBI director and then going on the News and verbally goofing and saying it was to get rid of this “fake” Russian news business and not what the WH claimed...because he hurt his dear friend Hillary (“Lock her up, lock her up.”) is going to bite him back...especially now that Comey has produced documents claiming that Trump asked him to ignore the Flynn investigation...besides the obstruction of justice, and witness intimidation that he publicly tweeted...fucking moron.
This is not even getting into people losing healthcare, our EPA being gutted, programs that primarily help the poor and elderly being cut altogether, while handing out big tax breaks.
This isn’t getting into the fact that we have the largest imprisoned population in the world...and the fact that most of them are for-profit with lobbyist to ensure maximum profits via legislation.
Or that he’s doing all this while giving out military a 30% boost when we pay more than the next 12 countries combined already.
We could do so much good with that money being literally blown up.
I can see no nation coming together under this man....just the shitty truth.

You make a lot of good points in your dialogue but the voting part wasn't one of them. The electoral college is set up in advance as the system for election. Candidates run their campaigns around it. If it was a popular vote system then more people would actually vote. There are some states that are certain in their affiliation. People know this and often times don't even go to the polls because they already know the results. The popular vote has no relevance except to anger and further divide people.

I'm all about every vote counting but I'm not about devaluing the results after the fact because I don't like the results.

I’ve commented on it before...there are countless other damaging things this administration has done so far...just here at home...not counting dropping $60 million + of bombs on a Syrian runway...but we can’t find $3 million in the Trump budget to continue and fund Meals on Wheels.
Or school lunches for poor children....subsidized heating oil for the poor and elderly so they don’t freeze to death in the winter.
But all you really need to look at is their “healthcare” bill...which amazingly throws 24 million + off of viable health insurance...which is probably double that now that the pre-existing clause has been torpedoed....we still don’t have the new CBO score for that yet...but it couldn’t have gotten better.
The CBO even estimates a savings of roughly $3 million a year in deaths that would have otherwise not happened under the ACA...so that should show everyone just how much this President and Congress care about the middle class on down...especially when their plan still shows premiums and deductibles going up up up!
Does nothing to address the price gouging of the pharmaceutical industry.
Throws our most sick and vulnerable off of health insurance and destroys patients protections like pre-existing conditions, or lifetime limits (yes, they want to bring those back too...”Sorry you have cancer...you’ve reached your lifetime limit which didn’t take long considering how much we all charge the consumer for everything.”), it’s not supported by any major medical group in the country.
It will be deadly and harmful to the citizens of this country, all in the name of profits.
Being a woman is a pre-existing condition in their plan...having had acne is as well.
Got raped? Pre-existing...pay more.
And let’s not forget about the “high risk pools”
That’ll work about as well as firing the FBI director investigating you.
Disgusting gouging of the public.
Those 65 and older can expect to pay about $15,000.00 more each year.
So if you can’t afford to eat...what do you think people will choose?
They will die.
But alas...don’t worry...the top percentile earners in the US will get huge windfall tax breaks!
So awesome for them!

People need to pay attention to the lack of humanity that this administration and GOP seem to be hunky-dory with.
Fucking sociopaths.

Check out “Operation Red Map” http://www.redistrictingmajorityproject.com which is the GOP plan to redistrict (no matter how fucking bizarre the lines on a map), and gerrymander, suppress the votes of minorities, onto their way to victory.
This election was a farce, firstly for the limitless infusions of money made possible by Citizen’s United and McCutcheon decisions in the SCOTUS, but secondly because it was played like the districts of states were chess pieces...not saying it wasn’t a good strategy, it worked after all, Trump won the electoral college without having won the popular votes...the same was the case for many Congressional seats that were won via RedMap.

But it is truly a loss for having fair and democratic elections that truly represent the people.
Trump said he will “drain the swamp”...he wants to make the whole US a fucking swamp....he being Swamp Thing...only not a good guy.

Yes there is much to be discussed.

I agree with you on so many of these points. I definitely agree with you on socialized medicine, Obamas plan was dysfunctional at best and a change will only feed more money into the system of distribution rather than into the hands of physicians who are doing the work and need resources to perform those functions. My significant other is an MD and we have had this discussion many times. Personally, I believe the problem is a supply and demand issue. The medical schools can only turn out so many physicians and other medical professionals. This creates a low supply with the demand for services already high, growing higher with everyone on insurance. Then there is a requirement to treat at a rate that is reduced by policy. I've already started to see some physicians stop taking patients and reducing the number of insurance providers they will accept. Cash pay is becoming more of a demand by the medical community. I have to say that controlling a market of professionals that have committed such a high level of effort to education in this manner will eventually start to have a detrimental outcome. These professionals will eventually decide to go to other areas of the world if they continue to be manipulated.
