OK over in @Impact Character's blog thread, some interesting words were said (by @Ginny in fact) about star signs and potentially being able to guess the sign of others.

It would be interesting to test this, to see if forum people could guess the signs of others. Yeah we might be judging just forum personas but it would be interesting nonetheless.

Contribute to this thread if you would like to guess somebody's sign/s or you would like others to try to guess yours, and explain why.

You can guess mine, if you like, but to start, I reckon that @Pin has some kind of Fire sign in his sun or moon. I'm going to saaay... Leo! If he ain't a Leo this is bs! :tearsofjoy:

I'm thinking @Pin is a Rising sign Leo but Aries or Taurus Sun....

And you @Hostarius ... my guess is you are a Rising Pisces, Libra Moon, Mars in Scorpio, Venus in either Scorpio or Pisces, Uranus either North or South Node and Cancer or Virgo Sun ... or any of that switched. :D *** oh, and definately Mercury in Gemini because of your communication/writing style.

Does this make sense to you?

I would have said you were Earth & Air in your Sun & Moon in either combination... Maybe Virgo sun Libra moon. What are you actually?

    Haha!

I can never guess star sign by the personality of a person; I'm highly doubtful that it means anything at all save for inducing self-fulfilling prophesies.

I could only guess dominant energy, and that is less complex, although astrology is a complex system of planetary interrelations that seems overtly bogous (and probably is to some degree, although on some level it makes sense the deeper you go into the matter). There are a lot of indicators for what we perceive and how we perceive it. Even a persona could potentially be inferred from a chart, but there are various possible combinations of factors that may indicate the same thing.

To believe in the predictive powers of astrology is to put a limit on what you can do with your life, so yeah, you're right about self-fulfilling prophesies. It can also be abused to make excuses about your past. Both are not what I believe it should be used for. Just like cognitive functions, for me it is a means to analyse areas of potential growth, how to prepare for potentially trying times but simultaneously I'm not expecting them to arrive (they often just don't and even if they did, not in a way that could be predicted, so if anything it would be a reflective tool), and maybe consider/plot the path I am most comfortable with. I believe it can affect me if I let it, but not my environment, so it still is up to me to decide how to engage with my environment.

Your words speak volumes @Ginny ;)

Astrology is just another tool, like tarot, to grasp some type of understanding of who we are and why we're here. I think it's amazing that we humans have come so far...from star gazing through a rock crevice to landing a scientific rover on another planet like Mars. Who knows what the future could bring.

To maintain our rational footing while we dabble in the isles of fantasy, we often have to be part skeptic, after all History is merely storytelling of the ages as they were filtered through the human mind. :D

Indeed. Ultimately, they are all just symbols and meanings wrapped into a digestible form. Wise women and shamans way back in the day (and in neo-paganism, as far as my sparse knowledge has let me see) knew that "all the stories are true", but faith, history and science have led to a tendency to take things literally, which makes it easy to discredit myth and religion as well as to exploit their believers. People often don't know/understand that even the "sciences" are basically story-telling, history even has it in its name (didn't check etymology though), but when children are taught to learn "facts" by heart, it defies the logic of all being perspectives. Perspectives are taught by humans, but not by the books we use to teach, unless it becomes their focus although it often isn't (the realm of higher education being sometimes more inclusive).

I am just another total noob when it comes to astrology...but feel free to guess mine :grinning:
Is there some site you use to determine what sign you are? I only know the western zodiac sign based upon the day of birth.

I agree to that. 'Truth' is beyond the human concepts.

The etymology of the word "history" actually is appropriate here. Apparently the word "history" was first and "story" was derived from that, perhaps from Old French or 5th century Latin.

"History anglicizes Latin historia, adopted from Greek, where it derives (abstract suffix -ia) from the adjective histoor, knowing, hence erudite, itself an agent (-oor) from eidenal (for *weidenal), to know, root eid-: Indo-European root, *weid-, connoting vision, which subserves knowledge: cf Greek eidos, form (IE etymon *weides), akin to Sanskrit védas-, knowledge, aspect, and English WIT: Greek histoor, therefore, is for *wistoor." (Eric Partridge, Origins)

So go back far enough in etymology and knowledge and vision and history are united.

I recall a passage in a copy of Herodotus' The Histories, and since I'm at home I dug it out:

'Herodotus himself does not expect us to believe everything we read. For him the word historie continued to carry its Ionian meaning of "research" or "investigation, enquiry", and he often emphasizes that what he gives us is provisional information, the best that he has been able in his researches to discover.' [Herodotus, The Histories, trans by. R. Waterfield (Oxford, 1998), pp. xxvii-xxviii.]

Take what you will from that, but to my mind, what we mean by' history' has always had a sense of 'the objectively truthful record of things that happened in the past'.

Even this statement has metaphysical presumptions, of course, but by no means were moderns the first to think it. Human seeking for objective truth alongside subjective meaning is probably as old as the species itself, and personally I don't think one necessarily denigrates the other (but whether modern Western culture sides with one or the other is a different matter entirely, as Ginny points out).
