Since I first played DnD as a young teenager, I've thought of people in terms of:
Lawful Good
Lawful Neutral
Lawful Evil
Neutral
Chaotic Good
Chaotic Neutral
Chaotic Evil

Edit using well-known super heroes: (to clarify for non-dnd geeks)
Lawful is following order, procedures, like Superman.
Superman will always cooperate with the law, or with the spirit of the law, to catch the bad guys.
Chaotic is not following any rules, just doing it anyway, like Wolverine or Spawn.
Wolverine will do it his own way in the end, whether that worked for the law or not. Vigilante justice.
Neutral is sometimes helping the law, sometimes not, like Batman.
