I suffer from classic optic neuropathy. (Left eye from staring through those old night vision scopes too long.)
I also have a lot of the symptoms associated with amygdala degeneration.

So, I thought I'd look up the classic traits common to serial killers and see how many I matched up with.

1. Over 90 percent of serial killers are male. Yes.

2. They tend to be intelligent, with IQ's in the "bright normal" range. I usually score about 140 (130-150 depending on the test. Could qualify here.

3. They do poorly in school, have trouble holding down jobs, and often work as unskilled laborers. I've had more than 3 dozen jobs and at least 10 career changes.

4. They tend to come from markedly unstable families. Yes.

5. As children, they are abandoned by their fathers and raised by domineering mothers. Pretty much. Absentee workaholic father who let my domineering mother run the show.

6. Their families often have criminal, psychiatric and alcoholic histories. Yes.

7. They hate their fathers and mothers. I like my dad.

8. They are commonly abused as children — psychologically, physically and sexually. Often the abuse is by a family member. Thankfully not sexually.

9. Many serial killers spend time in institutions as children and have records of early psychiatric problems. Wasn't institutionalized, but threatened with it a few times.

10. They have high rates of suicide attempts. Four. I'm assuming that's high?

11. From an early age, many are intensely interested in voyeurism, fetishism, and sado-masochistic pornography.
I wasn't into the S&M stuff.

12. More than 60 percent of serial killers wet their beds beyond the age of 12. I never bed wetted to my knowledge, nor have I ever had a wet dream.

13. Many serial killers are fascinated with fire starting. I think fire is beautiful, but I've never been a pyro.

14. They are involved with sadistic activity or tormenting small creatures. Absolutely not. If an animal has to be killed, I will do it as quick and painlessly as possible. But, I have no problem with it.

15.Some were involved in petty crimes, such as theft, fraud, vandalism, dishonesty or similar offenses. Heh, more than that, but was lucky enough and careful enough to never have gotten caught before I realized how stupid that was.

16. They were frequently bullied as children. So often that I became a "Bully slayer", and would seek out bullies to beat up.

By my guess that's about 12 out of 16... heh. I'm probably not a serial killer.

How do you line up?
 
Well...hmm.

1-I am a woman,
2-I have no idea what my IQ is,
3-I did awful in school (more boredom and being unorganized to the extreme than stupidity...at least I like to think so) and I've only ever worked part time jobs,
4-My parents were very strict Christians (I am SO not), been married over 30 years, but I was adopted and there has been some strain on our relationship because of details involving this,
5-I suppose you could say I have a bit of an abandonment complex from my adoption, but my father was the domineering one,
6-my biological family is overrun with bi-polar disorder, depression, and drug addiction
7- I don't hate my parents but I do not get along with them if stuck with them for any significant amount of time. We are just too different.
8- I am hesitant to call anything that happened abuse, if anything perhaps emotional abuse. Mostly from my father. He would yell and get very aggressive if I didn't follow along with his wishes.
9- I've never even seen a shrink, parents never believed in them and I've been too broke since to go myself.
10- I've only actually attempted 1 time, but I've thought about it and schemed quite a few times.
11- Voyuerism is kind of hot I guess but I have never actively participated in this, really not into the other stuff so much.
12- Wasn't a bed wetter past age 6.
13- I set fire to a bible in my back yard once when I was at my most angsty teenagery-ness. Probably doesn't count.
14- No, I don't and have never abused animals. (would someone actually be honest about this though?)
15- I was a huge klepto in high school and for a couple years after. I easily stole probably over 1000 dollars worth of shit from make up to CDs to clothes, you name it. I got caught once. Didn't get arrested or put on my record though. Community service got me out of it.
16- Yeah, there was like a bullseye on my forehead for bullies. I got rocks thrown at me, punched for no reason (existing?), name called various things...

I KNOW I am not a serial killer already. :P So I don't know why I did this. Boredom maybe.
 
I can't be bothered with the list. There is only one reason why I could not be a serial killer. After you've done it once and gotten away with it, doing it repeatedly just increases your chances of being caught. It's an unnecessary risk, really.






P.S. I haven't killed anyone.

ah. . for the record , I know serial killers. . I am not like them. . they are evil. . it drips off of them, you can feel it, smell it, it peremeates their entire being . it is very difficult to be around.

I work in a mximum security prison. . yes I know serial killers.I know some very well. it is avery difficutl place for me adn I am seriously thinging of leaving after doing it for a dozen years. . for just those reasons. . I am getting ot where I cant take it anymore.

I think I have too much Fe going on to do it continuously, but at the same time, I could probably kill someone "in the heat of the moment" so to speak.

5. As children, they are abandoned by their fathers and raised by domineering mothers. Father worked a lot, but mother is pretty much like me, another INFJ type. I don't think "domineering" was in her vocabulary.

Other than being male, having a high IQ and doing poorly in school (all of which are common enough), I can't say I possess any of those traits significantly. Well, I loved to play with fire - but it was more the thrill of blowing shit up and making flamethrowers, etc.

Anyway, the only interest I would have in being a serial killer would be to see if I could pull it off logistically. I've thought about it a fair amount and have concluded the safest way would be to dispose of the body at sea. Everything else has to be built around that.

Buy a boat. Lure people onto it for a cruise. Take them way out to see in an area with a current that flows outward. Throw them off. Keep the boat out of their reach until they fatigue and drown. Done. No signs of struggle, no DNA samples, nothing. The only thing you'd have to do is park your boat in several different places with no cameras, so you can say you let the person off at one of the other locations if asked. Simple. Elegant.
 
i think i'd rather be an assassin than a serial killer.

I did poorly my first time round in school, but mainly because of the instability of my situation and bullying. the second time round I did fine. I am however an under-achiever. though I failed all my exams in highschool the first time round, I did pass the second time round, but not with flying colours like was expected except in music and drama. I also never really studied that hard, and since them have never had work that taxes my brain, and I don't know if I would want it. so probably a yes.
