Tolkien

Do reread the books - the films are good but nothing like as good as Tolkiens original. A big issue is that the films had to compromise the true story in order to fit with the publication constraints of their medium. They did a good job of it given their situation, but the books are much deeper and more profound.
I've tried a number of times, but I've always been a very slow reader. It would take me six weeks, and I no longer have the desire. I can watch the movies in four nights and still get to bed on time.

I know there's a lot missing in the movies that took place in the books. A lot of people talk about Tom Bobmadill and wonder who he was. I maintain that he was Tolkien, inserting himself into the story, just as Kurt Vonnegut inserted himself, less opaquely, into Slaughterhouse 9.

I don't read much anymore. I haven't purchased a fictional book in many years.
