I like the idea of solar sails n stuff too though. And honestly, for the first 500 years or so of space travel in our system, I think we do need to have multiple redundancy's for propulsion.
A bit like yachts with both engines and sails ;p Maybe something similar with microwave propulsion engines and a solar sail rig. Similar to that book: the wreck of the river of stars.

The first years of solar system travel will be dangerous. Much like the ships on the oceans of old. Trial and error will refine what we build. I am sure death in space will become common place for a while.
