Would you recognise oppression if you saw it?

I've been musing about this since the news broke about the latest "Gay Rage" attack on someone who doesnt see things the way they do, it seems its not really about opposing oppression these days but ensuring its not happening to your team and happens to people you think are the other team, whatever way those things are defined.

What do you think?

I think there was a lot of stuff in 1984 and Orwell's other writings which get over looked in favour of the less subtle stuff, one of the things in Lion and The Unicorn was about how fascism wouldnt appear as fascism or appear to be fascism in order for it to succeed, so in somewhere like England it would be called IngSoc (English Socialism) or adopt the familiar symbol of the Lion and The Unicorn instead of a foreign swastika, so I kind of think that fascism is getting ushered in by people who imagine they are anti-fascists for the most part and wouldnt recognise oppression if it jumped up and bit them.

I never oppressed anyone. In fact if I can oppress homosexuals just by merely being heterosexual and going about my heterosexual life then we got a big problem here.

I would really love for him to reply and disagree with me on these grounds alone, and then say something like,

"Obviously homosexual people are oppressed more than heteorsexual people on a global and societal scale, I do not think we are equally oppressed nor can we be."

But guess what?

He didn't.
