Here's a novel idea, I was listening to the coverage of outrage and murder globally in the wake of the second Charlie Hebdo cartoon of Muhammed and it struck me that its all one part of the world really which is exhibiting this and behaving in this way when presented with the trigger stimuli, sure things happen in other parts of the world but in those parts its generally treated as the actions of outsiders of one description or another, even if you're a national you've in all likelihood more in common with those other parts of the world or even been there on one of the fighty vacations the killers seem to take.
Now, I'm not necessarily saying it is the case because I dont buy into the whole conspiracy scene and I wouldnt dream of depriving the actual actors involved of free agency either, although I think their personal motives resemble that of high school shooters or spree killers and its being exploited by others who use them as puppets, but this could be exploited for a redrawing of geo-politics.
Chomsky speculated years ago that worse than any new east-west cold war or EU vs US rivalry or even Chinese vs US rivalry would be a developed vs developing world cold war. I used to think, well, why would they want this but the reasons which exist for other sorts of conflict exist for one such as this, plus this kind of conflict is based upon certain seemingly intractable cultural differences and divides which are not amenable to any sort of negotiated compromise or political settlement, not even to talks as would appear to be the case. Its also got the added advantages or being totally random, it could strike at the heart of high finance or ruling class elements as easily as be contained within the slums from which it originates. Its also liable to be a "bonding agent" among developed, rival nations and in some ways contain otherwise dangerous conflict between those nations.
It looks more and more likely that this could be the case, Russia is the only rogue element in this to be honest, I think in some ways the Russians are just sore that many of the ideas necessary to this were in the ferment within their territory but the US "stole the march" on them. With the fomenting of the threat of political islam within Chechnia etc. which used to be nationalistic or seperatist struggles I reckon Russia was thinking of anti-terrorism as the next "big idea" (big lie?) after "building socialism" went bad. Before 9/11 it was Russia who were more inclined to talk in vague but no uncertain terms about wars on terror. The Russia position of being the only break on western hubris seems like a poorly examined but equally nationalistic back up position now the original one has been lost. So they are the only ones which are kind of fucking things up for a new global divide.
What do you think? Is this the way things are going? If it is what's the prospect for upsetting that or adjusting that? The threat from political islam is real, elements in the west which want to fight global injustice I dont think can ignore it or think it will be placated or perturbed by any real steps in the direction of global justice to be honest.
