Everyone,

There's been so many great musicians and composers that we have forgotten over the years. Some contributed more than we can imagine, others were just great and disappeared.

If I said the name "Kurt Weill" to you on the streets, would you know who I was talking about? I wouldn't either, necessarily.

Kurt Weill was a German Jew that wrote socialist and socially conscious plays and operas in the Weimar Republic. He wrote the amazing and extremely popular Threepenny Opera, which featured songs like Die Moritat von Mackie Messer (Mack the Knife), Seeräuberjenny (Pirate Jenny) and my personal favorite Ballade über die Frage: "Wovon lebt der Mensch"? (What Keeps Mankind Alive?)

These songs have all been translated into English. Some interpretations have been great, others, eh, not so much.

I really like this version of What Keeps Mankind Alive? by Tom Waits:

You gentlemen who think you have a mission
To purge us of the seven deadly sins
Should first sort out the basic food position
Then start your preaching, that's where it begins

Your lot who preach restraint and watch your waist as well
Should learn for once, the way the world is run
However much you twist or whatever lies that you tell
Food is the first thing, morals follow on

So first make sure that those who are now starving
Get proper helpings when we all start carving

What keeps mankind alive?

What keeps mankind alive?
The fact that millions are daily tortured
Stifled, punished, silenced and oppressed

Mankind can keep alive thanks to its brilliance
In keeping its humanity repressed
And for once you must try not to shrink the facts
Mankind is kept alive by bestial acts

Since I'm guessing most of you have heard the English version of Mack the Knife, here's the original German version. Notice the different tempo and the spooky mood, which seems appropriate as it's about a cold-blooded killer. German lyrics, because why not:

Und der Haifisch, der hat Zähne
Und die trägt er im Gesicht
Und Macheath, der hat ein Messer
Doch das Messer sieht man nicht.

Und es sind des Haifischs Flossen
Rot, wenn dieser Blut vergießt
Mackie Messer trägt ’nen Handschuh
Drauf man keine Untat liest.

An der Themse grünem Wasser
Fallen plötzlich Leute um
Es ist weder Pest noch Cholera
Doch es heißt: Mackie geht um.

An’nem schönen blauen Sonntag
Liegt ein toter Mann am Strand
Und ein Mensch geht um die Ecke
Den man Mackie Messer nennt.

Und Schmul Meier bleibt verschwunden
Und so mancher reiche Mann
Und sein Geld hat Mackie Messer
Dem man nichts beweisen kann.

Jenny Towler ward gefunden
Mit ’nem Messer in der Brust
Und am Kai geht Mackie Messer
Der von allem nichts gewußt.

Wo ist Alfons gleich, der Fuhrherr?
Kommt er je ans Sonnenlicht?
Wer es immer wissen könnte
Mackie Messer weiß es nicht.

Und das große Feuer in Soho
Sieben Kinder und ein Greis
In der Menge Mackie Messer, den
Man nichts fragt, und der nichts weiß.

Und die minderjähr’ge Witwe
Deren Namen jeder weiß
Wachte auf und war geschändet
Mackie welches war dein Preis?

Go ahead, call me a commie ;-)
