We talked about 'doctrine of signatures' in my herbal med class.
Its basically the idea that the Creator/Creators has put a signature in every plant to help us identify its use to us.
It is by no means a science and it is highly subjective and flawed but also very interesting and fun to think about.

e.g.

Tomato- four chambers and is red. The heart is red and has four chambers. Research shows tomatoes are indeed pure heart and blood food.
Walnut- looks like a little brain. We now know that walnuts help develop over 3 dozen neuro-transmitters for brain function.
Figs- are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the motility of male sperm and increase the numbers of sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

And what do zucchinis, bananas and cucumbers remind you of? Aperantly they are good for the health of the penis.

Anyway there are lots of foods that have had a signature identified. Some of them are reasonable and others are just far fetched and grasping at straws.

If I created a world I think I would put signatures in plants to help the inhabitants recognise their use.

Food for thought
