I used to just write my own thoughts and poetry but then one day a character just came to me and wouldn't leave. I kept developing her and slowly other characters emerged and I wove them together into my first novel :)

If you are finding verbal communication difficult you could try using text/written communication more. I find it easier to write how I feel - assuming that the person you want to communicate with is able to write.
