Teach him something to do, like guard the back yard by walking the perimeter with him with commands like, "Patrol yard", "stop" , "sit" them aim your hand and arm to the direction he is supposed to go. "Come" with a slight nudge on the leash.

Raise your hand up and say "up". More praise. "Come" and walk to the next turn. "Good man" at the end of your patrol with treat inside the house. My dog did it on his own after two days. I did not make him heel. I did my arm signs when he turned to see why I wasn't there.
