I'm sorry you went through that. That's not good to happen to a young person.

Obviously I'm in Cali because my wife is here and the jobs for a tech person are pretty good so its not a bad place in that regard. I know some people aren't happy with the politics and there are a few... religious 'cults' that operate in certain parts of Cali but that tends to be further North as we're below LA.

You can probably get to the border in a few hours that's how close we are so there is a massive hispanic population so its not quite the same as mainstream Cali (although we might move to a better area in the future as Mexican neighbours are rather... noisy).

Are there some larger reasons why you feel Cali is toxic or is it mostly on the personal level? Obviously I don't want to pry into any personal events that occured, just any broad strokes you can offer.

Oooh.... Lots of reasons.
Cost of living, smog, asshole people, and traffic are at the top of my list. Also, it's burning down.

Well yes, its mostly true. Not met a lot of assholes but then again haven't been out a great deal and quite a few of the hispanics are friendly folk. Doesn't seem much worse than London all things considered, might change as I head further North.
The Drivers are a bit scary, and turning on a red light seems a rather dangerous practice...

Yeah it is extremly deopressiong. Sadly Quiet a few have moved here from out of state apparently which doesn't help. Cali's healthcare is better than a lot of other states though so the homeless can get better support than a lot of more Red States.
It is a systemic problem though. More needs to be done to help them get lives together otherwise they just stay on the streets until they die...
