Fictional, from a brilliant show by Joss Whedon. In the show, Doctor Horrible is a struggling super villain trying to get into the 'Evil League of Evil', but his motivation stems from his belief that society is messed up and needs to be under new management. His nemesis is Captain Hammer, who is clearly an egocentric jerk, but only Doctor Horrible seems to be able to see how he really is.
