In the 90's and 2000's, there was the occasional leak from financial behemoths. Then we had the Snowden leak in 2013 that showed how much secrecy there is in this world.

Now there is another leak, the "Panama Papers" from a law firm, Financial Mosseca, registered in Panama. 11 million documents have been released.

Let us find out where corruption is hiding in society. Adam Smith's Invisible Hand of the Market is slowly becoming visible. We should and we must put hand cuffs on it when appropriate. :whoo:

The story: "The Panama Papers include approximately 11.5 million documents — more than the combined total of the Wikileaks Cablegate, Offshore Leaks, Lux Leaks, and Swiss Leaks. The data primarily comprises e-mails, pdf files, photo files, and excerpts of an internal Mossack Fonseca database. It covers a period spanning from the 1970s to the spring of 2016."

Over a year ago, an anonymous source contacted the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) and submitted encrypted internal documents from Mossack Fonseca, a Panamanian law firm that sells anonymous offshore companies around the world.

These shell firms enable their owners to cover up their business dealings, no matter how shady.

In the months that followed, the number of documents continued to grow far beyond the original leak.

Ultimately, SZ acquired about 2.6 terabytes of data, making the leak the biggest that journalists had ever worked with.
The source wanted neither financial compensation nor anything else in return, apart from a few security measures.

The data provides rare insights into a world that can only exist in the shadows.
It proves how a global industry led by major banks, legal firms, and asset management companies secretly manages the estates of the world’s rich and famous: from politicians, Fifa officials, fraudsters and drug smugglers, to celebrities and professional athletes.

This is an impressive illustration of the size of the data.

You’ll probably have a Clinton, a Bush, and a Trump.

Though it is legal to manage money offshore, the practice has drawn increasing criticism during years of enduring austerity.

The British prime minister has been calling for reforms, recognising — along with other world leaders — that the system is too secret and in need of an overhaul.
The stories you need to read, in one handy email

In 2012, Cameron criticised complex offshore structures saying it is “not fair and not right”. At a G8 summit in Enniskillen three years ago, he demanded more transparency, saying this would be better for business in the UK.

Last year, he added: “I’ll continue to make the case for transparency with international partners, including the British overseas territories and crown dependencies. And I am willing to go further, and take concrete steps to force the pace.”

David Cameron is not doing anything to reform the offshore banking sector.

For more on the Cameron family finances, do read this feature in the Daily Mail by Isabel Oakeshott (co-author with Lord Ashcroft of the partially-damning Cameron biography, Call Me Pig Fucker Dave).

Here’s an excerpt.

When Ian died, suddenly on holiday in France, his estate was valued at just £2.74million. Crucially, however, his will only detailed his UK assets. In April 2015, a Channel 4 investigation confirmed what many had long suspected: that he had left money squirrelled away in Jersey. Quite how much is unknown, but the ‘grant of probate’ filed in Jersey (The UK's pedophile safe haven) and attached to his will would only have been required for assets of more than £10,000. Cameron’s father also had financial links to Switzerland — raising the possibility that the family retains assets there.

All this would be enough to put Cameron in a league well above the hard-working middle classes. It is Samantha’s money, however, that pushes the couple into the ranks of the super rich.

She, too, has made an art of underplaying it. In her twenties, she would tell people that her father Reggie was a ‘farmer’. In fact, Sir Reginald Sheffield is the eighth holder of a baronetcy that dates back to 1755, and has a property portfolio worth upwards of £20million. It includes 3,000 acres of arable land; a £5million stately home near York; a place in London; and the family seat in Lincolnshire, a Regency mansion called Normanby Hall.

Labour has said that David Cameron has still not answered key questions about his family finances and his late father’s offshore fund. (See 11.37am.) Downing Street issued a new statement this morning saying Cameron and his family will not benefit from offshore trusts in the future. But Number 10 has not responded to calls asking for confirmation that this covers Blairmore Holdings, which is now based in Ireland - although Ireland is generally treated as an offshore financial centre. (See 4.33pm.)

Earlier I said it was arguable whether Blairmore Holdings still counts as an offshore fund given that it is now based in Ireland. (See 10.27am.)

But it almost certainly does. This IMF paper from 2007 (pdf) on how to define an offshore centre says Ireland is an offshore centre according to the conventional IMF definition (see table 10) but not if a stricter definition is used (see page 15).

And, according to Wikipedia, Ireland is designated as an offshore financial centre by the IMF, the OECD and the Financial Secrecy Index.

Panama Papers Is Media Psy-op In Morphing Info War

Posted on April 5, 2016 by Ann Kreilkamp

When I finally got a chance to look at the much heralded Panama Papers, I noticed one thing: those targeted out of the tetrabites of downloaded data were, guess who? Putin, Iceland, and other rogue figures and states in the crosshairs of the U.S. State Department.. Whaddayaknow? Plus, not one U.S. citizen was mentioned. In fact, the map shown left the U.S. completely blank.

What do you expect? The leak is being managed by the grandly but laughably named “International Consortium of Investigative Journalists”, which is funded and organised entirely by the USA’s Center for Public Integrity. Their funders include Ford Foundation, Carnegie Endowment, Rockefeller Family Fund, W K Kellogg Foundation, Open Society Foundation (Soros), among many others. Do not expect a genuine expose of western capitalism. The dirty secrets of western corporations will remain unpublished.Expect hits at Russia, Iran and Syria and some tiny “balancing” western country like Iceland. A superannuated UK peer or two will be sacrificed — someone already with dementia.

I am just here to point out that people shouldn't mistake Corporatism for Capitalism. Capitalism is the reason so much scrutiny and involvement of a free press has managed to put so much attention and pressure onto these papers. We should be appreciating Capitalism for exposing corruption, not trying to end it.

Capitalism only works for a whole society if there are certain guidelines that are followed and met, otherwise you have the US version which I might add is a corporatocracy.
Bravo Capitalism…you’re so appreciated.
Because only Capitalism brings forth freedom according to the above.

I am so hoping a Clinton will turn up in this.

147 fbi agents, extradition of foreign nationals related to the investigation, immunity of key witnesses. .. Clinton is going to jail. And we get to listen to liberals cry about it for 50 years.
The first thing I am doing is posting a picture of her face as the prison sentence is read on my wall. I shall smile every time I see it.
