Would you ever own or operate a self-driving/autonomous vehicle (AV)? When it's successfully made and road worthy. From what I'm seeing it could happen this century (somewhat).

IMO: I'd probably not own one as I love the feel of manually driving and even at an affordable price I'd still probably not. Unless I get to a point in life where I'm not able to drive anymore.

If it were affordable, sure, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't drive for the sentimental value. I just would take advantage of the self-driving for things like e.g. being able to read while getting to work/not in general having large amounts of time wasted by being forced to drive at all times.

I mean, I'd hope self-driving cars have a manual option.

    Yeah.

All cars should be self-driving (automated).

    Nah, I wouldn't.
There are too many variables when driving.
Hypothetically if the road was without snow and ice then yes it could be worthy (if a lot of implementations were made), but if there is ice and snow then definitely not... even the automatic cars driven in snow and ice can be hard to operate.:weary:

Yes. I don't drive often (or well). Self-driving cars are something I've dreamed of for years.
I appreciate cars, and learned to drive both manual and automatic, but a reliable self-driving car would be ideal.

When answering this question, I of course am assuming it's possible to make one as good as or better than (say) the best human being at driving there is, or at least better than me.

I'm surer it exists (if the particles in the brain can do it, surely other particles can) than I am that we are smart enough to build it, as with all AI things.

For a good old country drive with no traffic, I'll take over.
For commuting (and for my senior years) I'll let the computer do it. Particularly when the fog is bad.

I think it's far scarier to try and cross in front of a self-driving vehicle than sit in one.

There in lies the problem with many elderly. They want to believe, even prove that they are fine. Driving = freedom and control. When the time comes, will you be able to yield the control?

Also to keep in mind, self-driving cars would be great for those who aren’t capable of driving any machinery—such as those with disabilities or physical handicaps.

I actually had a discussion with my brain research professor a couple semesters ago regarding how Nissan is testing self-driving cars using EEG brain waves. Pretty neat and I welcome the new innovation coming in; but there are definitely a lot of factors to consider when it comes to our external situation, the reliability of the car, and if the person is in a good mental state (no intoxication, drugs, etc).

So personally; I believe it would be amazing for those who are physically unable to drive, or for those with extreme anxiety with manual driving. However, I believe there still needs to be further testing and making sure self-cars provide the best safety and reliability before being released into market.

If proven safe with manual overrides, yes. I could repurpose the time to do other stuff, like post on the forum.

No, nope. Unless it's a closed circuit with no cars or traffic around. Otherwise, nope, never gonna happen. :)

It’s the only kind of car I’d own because I don’t drive anymore. It’s too dangerous for me.

I don't believe I would. I have to be in control when behind the wheel.
