Why do People Hate the Things They Need?

Optional conveniences, luxuries, friendships, and aides are all well loved by the people who choose them.

BUT. People seem to hate the same lovable things when they become a necessity. Is it just because the theoretical ability to opt out isn't present?

Examples: some people will have separate cars for commuting and for recreation; occasional pain killers vs essential medications; people will love friends, but resent them if they need them; etc.
 
It implies that the baseline difficulty of living is higher.
 
Reminds me of the phrase, "Familiarity breeds contempt" or maybe something along the lines of taking something or someone for granted :)
