Humans tend to find a way to survive, and lots of off grid folk are fairly technology suspicious. So unless skynet comes and actively seeks out people with weapons, there will be people regardless of AI issues.
This is my suspicion, as well. There's absolutely no reason our future technocrat overlords (and ladies) will benefit from augmenting entire populations. Futurists are generalists and project current trends (perfectly) as time capsules. I would sooner picture a scenario from Elysium followed by the Matrix than the singularity evolving all of humanity.
