How does God save a sinner?

Salvation involves two things:
Payment of the debt of offense: atonement through expiation.
Communication of the fruit of expiation: sanctification.
The effect of these two aspects is justification, literally, a setting of one right with God, both through removal of offense and due punishment; but also through the establishment of common goods and love (grace).
