Game of Thrones

One of the best series I've ever read. Don't be surprised by the number of his characters...he needs many with all he kills off. "Dances with Dragons" comes out this summer too. And it's about damn time! lol Looking forward to the series and the new book!

Winter is coming...

Just read the first. Am amazed with the hell he puts the character through, the utterly delicate and empathic writing (each has a specific way of looking through their surroundings), and with the characters.

Poor...Starks, really. :|

Also......Jaime's actor is HAWT. >_>;;;

It's looking good so far. They seem to be following the book exactly. That's leads me to wonder about Sean bean's character (Ned)

I won't ruin it for you

The books were great; I've watched the series and it is alright too. I imagine it will get more interesting once we reach the interesting parts of the books :D

I've never read the books but the series is pretty good and I'm usually quite a harsh critic but I can easily say that it's the best series playing at the moment....though it isn't against much competition, I would recommend it to others though : )

I read the first book, and I going through the second one currently. The books are always better, but the show was a decent depiction. I'd be more satisfied if they were using direwolves in the show more, but I guess it's harder to work with dogs, even when they are trained, on top of everything else they had to do or make for the show.

The flow of the narrative is fast, and I like that. Also I appreciate the wealth of characters, the symbolism, and the ruthlessness Martin shows to his characters. Just when you get to know one of them better, off with his/hers head he goes. :D

Edit: the thing that seriously irked me when it comes to the show was that they didn't bother to change the natural colour of eyebrows of two actresses and one actor, who's hair is to be very blond in the show, while their natural colour was deep brown. I couldn't believe that none of the ladies involved in making the show didn't bother to point this up and correct it.

Also, the Targaryans are supposed to have purple eyes. They don't in the show

My spouse read the books, and we've been watching the show. I find myself having a hard time following everything that's going on, and my spouse has to fill me in based on the background he has from the books. Soooo many characters....!

I'm enjoying it, though-- I'm pretty much good with anything with a medieval/renaissance/fantasy feel. Also, I like the Dothraki! They're like Rennie-Gypsy-Pirate people!
:m183:

At this point in the game I've given up on being a pure stickler for book to screen interpretation being spot on, but so far I've been pleased overall with HBO's show. Long been a Sean Bean fan....Get em Sharpe!

I'm just mad I don't get HBO. I love the books, even if he does keep killing everyone off!

OHH Spoiler Questingpoet;

I read them as they came out. I love the books. Yea, I don't have cable at all.

Well I didn't say WHO he kills and he does leave some of them alive. It's why he has so many characters NDN NT , he can kill more of em I think! lol

What is awesome about it?

I just watched one of the episodes for the first time today, and boy was it pretty..
Beautiful cinematography. I don't know what the hell is going on yet, though. Something about wolves and evil undead children beheading people.
After my boyfriend told me it was a book series I thought, "I'll bet it's good."

I'm in need of summer reading.

Everything! It's very realistic as compared to a lot of Sword and Sorcery fantasy. It has a lot of charcters that are very "grey" instead of the simple black or white...good and bad. As mentioned he kills off many characters, again both good and bad. No one is safe. He depicts things you don't often see in this genre like incest and maiming as opposed to killing. Then lets you inside that charcter as they try to deal with their new handicap. On of the main characters is a dwarf of particular cunning.

I love how he takes characters in postions of lesser power because of their lot (a woman or a dwarf) and show them to be more competant than their male counterparts. He shows the weak become strong and the strong, who have never questioned themself before, fail. He doesn't use sterotypes really at all. His characters are all interesting and unique. A 9 year old girl training to become an assassin? Outstanding!

It's perfect fodder for this type of series really. It sounds like they are doing a decent job of it so far.

acd; most definitely read the series. I recommend it to any person who enjoys fantasy. I got my mother to read the books and she fell in love with them, she doesn't really get into fantasy novels.

Tamagochi : I didn't watch that Shrek, but yeah he does look similar. But the actor's.../yum.

I am kinda disappointed that Loras and Renly seems to be made as quite......effeminate, bishonen as they were, but alas.

@acd; Agreed; read the series if you like moral ambiguity, certain complex thoughts and HEAVY political play (ahem; "game of thrones"), as well as delicately crafted proses and sentences. OH, and food porns. GRRM wrote scrumptious proses of foods.

I am reading the second book since yesterday, and I am really really tempted to scream;

SANSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

For multitude layers of reasons.

I need something other than vogue and vanity fair to read.
I shall pick these up. Will res-erect thread in a month.
