For all the Nutella Lovers

The media stories are another example of unbridled stupidity. The European Food Safety Authority's report states the problem in its title: the problem isn't palm oil, it is in how palm oil has been processed till now.

I think the oversight of this fact can only be deliberate... and buys into a very established campaign against palm oil farming in Asia and South America, conducted by environmentalists funded by Canola-based industries.

"Process contaminants in vegetable oils and foods
Glycerol-based process contaminants found in palm oil, but also in other vegetable oils, margarines and some processed foods, raise potential health concerns for average consumers of these foods in all young age groups, and for high consumers in all age groups....

...The highest levels of GE, as well as 3-MCPD and 2-MCPD (including esters) were found in palm oils and palm fats, followed by other oils and fats. For consumers aged three and above, margarines and ‘pastries and cakes’ were the main sources of exposure to all substances.

Glycidyl fatty acid esters – genotoxic and carcinogenic
.......
“The exposure to GE of babies consuming solely infant formula is a particular concern as this is up to ten times what would be considered of low concern for public health,” said Dr Knutsen.

The Panel’s review revealed that levels of GE in palm oils and fats halved between 2010 and 2015, due to voluntary measures taken by producers. This has contributed to an important fall in consumer exposure to these substances."

Presumably, manufacturers of palm oil containing foods, will be pressuring oil processing suppliers to modify the process to completely eliminate the introduction of the problem glycerols and esters to the raw product.

I suspect that palm oil will probably be sold in grades, much like olive oil. It is the heat extraction which breaks down the fats into the problem glycerols, so a cold processed "European food grade" palm oil shouldn't be too much of a hurdle.

Anyhow, it would probably serve people well to eat Nutella by the spoonful, rather than by the jar in the meanwhile. Choose your poison.

Seems pretty creepy now

You'll get your fingers and tongue bruised and caught in mouse traps, if you ever come home drunk, because you love Nutella too.
